While various courts in Pima County are remaining open, jury trials are being delayed because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Some hearings will only take place via telephone, and anyone feeling ill can request a delay in a court hearing, officials said Monday.

Several actions ordered by Presiding Judge Kyle A. Bryson are meant to "reduce the number of visitors to our courthouses while safeguarding individuals' access to justice and constitutional rights," a press release from the courts said.

"We request that you do not come to court if you are ill. Instead, please make other arrangements concerning your appointment at the courthouse," the release said.

Scheduled weddings at the courthouse will continue at Justice Court through the end of the week, but ceremonies will then be halted for at least two weeks. You may contact the court at 520-724-3505 to schedule a private wedding conducted by a justice of the peace...

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been updated to reflect Mayor Regina Romero's retraction of her statement that restaurants would be ordered closed. Take-out and drive-through service will be allowed.

All bars and other public venues will be shut down in Tucson through the end of the month, with restaurants limited to only take-out service, Mayor Regina Romero announced Tuesday afternoon.

"I have decided that it is in the best interest of maintaining public health to close restaurants, bars, food courts, gyms, and other venues where groups of people congregate through the end of the month, effective 8pm this evening," she said in a tweet that was quickly deleted.

Drive-through and take-out services will not be affected by Romero's decree, she clarified after tweeting an announcement that restaurants would be closed.

"This morning, after consulting with business stakeholders, the city attorney, and city manager, I have made the determination that it is in the best interest of maintaining public health to suspend dine-in services in restaurants and food courts, and transition to delivery/pick-up only services. Bars, gyms, and other specific venues stated in the proclamation where groups of people congregate are directed to be closed through the end of the month," she said.

"My top priority, above all else, is to protect public health. This is a painful decision that I do not take lightly. Our restaurants and small businesses need clear, uniform direction, and this order provides them exactly that," Romero tweeted before updating her public comments to reflect that restaurants were not being ordered to completely close.

Romero declared a state of emergency in the city due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"These changes are immediate and will last through the end of March, at which point we will re-examine our policies," she said...

The National Junior College Athletic Association announced Monday that it has canceled the upcoming national basketball tournaments and all spring sports due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision ends the season for Pima's women's basketball team, which was scheduled to travel to Port Huron, Michigan later this month. The Aztecs were a No. 7 seed in nationals.

Pima women's basketball coach Todd Holthaus said his players and staff were "crushed" by the news of the cancelation. The NJCAA initially moved the tournament from March 17 to April 20.

"Like all the other teams that didn't get to compete, we feel like we didn't get to complete our story," Holthaus said. "That being said, life is precious and we all know that there are bigger concerns."

Holthaus called the team special, saying he knows they "would've turned some heads in Michigan."

The NJCAA said in a statement that the "difficult decision" was based on recent guidance from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

"As an association, the NJCAA exhausted all possible avenues to potentially postpone competition for both upcoming basketball championships and spring sport competition," said Dr. Christopher Parker, NJCAA President & CEO. "We believe following the recommendations of the CDC is in the best interest of our member colleges and our student-athletes."

The NJCAA's cancelation includes all practices, regular season, postseason and national championship play. All on and off-campus recruiting for any sport will be suspended until April 15, and reevaluated at that time.

The NJCAA said that student-athletes competing in spring sports will receive an extra year of eligibility.

The Pima women's basketball team was seeded No. 7 headed into the now-canceled NJCAA Women's Basketball Division II National Tournament.

t 83 years old, blues guitarist Buddy Guy is still touring the world as one of the last of a generation of prominent blues pioneers.

His current tour takes him through the Rialto Theatre, 318 E. Congress St., Saturday, March 14.

In a recent interview with the Washington Post, Guy said he was worried about where the blues will go after artists like him and vocalist Bobby Rush, who turned 86 in November, are no longer around to keep it going.

Guy told the Post he tries to encourage younger musicians who have talent, like his blues elders, Muddy Waters and B.B. King did for him as a fresh-faced guitarist just getting his start.

“Whenever I can see somebody I think got the talent, I’ll just give them a chance to come up and play with me,” he told the Post.

Guy is known for his playful attitude on stage, often taking the time to make his way through the audience, while still playing his guitar, during the show.

The evening begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $58-$70 through 740-1000 or rialtotheatre.com
