Even quality parts have a service life. The vacuum pump on this Mini Cooper seized up from lack of lubrication. The oil passage it utilizes to maintain a steady flow was completely blocked with carbon buildup and deposits. When it did, the rotational force of the valve train took out the weakest link, the bolt holding the cam gear to the exhaust cam. It was sheered right off, taking the timing chain with it, and causing the top of the pistons to contact the exhaust valves as they were not in the closed position when this occurred. The end result was serious damage to the engine. “Catastrophic failure” is a term that gets used all too commonly in auto repair. But addressing aging components before they fail can avoid the worst case scenario. Vacuum pumps are known failure items, and they don’t always cause this level of destruction. But replacing them preventatively can extend the life of your engine, and potentially avoid a costly engine replacement, as is the case here.
