This 1972 BMW 2002 is a lot more important than its size lets on.

Rewind to the late 1950s and BMW was nearly done. The company was bleeding money and came within a hair of being swallowed up by Mercedes-Benz. What saved them was a new line of cars built around a clean, modern engine and the idea that a small sedan could actually be fun to drive. The 02 series was the compact, two-door version of that idea, and the 2002 was its high point.

The story of how the 2002 got its 2.0L engine is the kind of thing enthusiasts still love. Two BMW guys, working separately, both dropped the bigger motor into the little 1600 body just because they could. US importer Max Hoffman caught wind of it and pushed BMW to actually build it. They did, and it landed in America right when a Car and Driver review turned it into a cult car overnight.

Here's why it really matters though. The 2002 basically invented the affordable sports sedan. Light, simple, rear-wheel drive, a willing engine and nothing in the way between you and the road. When BMW retired the 02 in the mid 70s, the car that replaced it was the very first 3 Series. So every 3 Series ever built traces straight back to this shape sitting right here.

People hold onto these for a reason. What's your dream vintage BMW? Tell us in the comments.

Pete Bristow here...

This Alfa Spider came in with a problem that would've sent a lot of shops straight to the parts catalog.

It died mid U-turn and wouldn't start back up. Easy to assume the turn had something to do with it, but that timing was just coincidence. This was going to happen no matter what the car was doing.

So we went hunting. Electrical testing pointed at the main relay not properly feeding power to the ECU, the car's engine computer. Dig deeper and there it was, a bad wire and a faulty connection inside the ECU itself, just enough to keep the computer from fully waking up.

Here's where it gets good. The easy answer is to throw a whole new engine computer at it, big money, long wait. Instead we ran a new wire to restore the power it was missing and brought the car back to life the smart way. Same result, a fraction of the cost, and no waiting on a replacement ECU that didn't need replacing.

That's the difference experience makes. Anybody can swap parts. Knowing exactly where to look is the hard part.

Seen a shop talk you into replacing something that didn't need it? Tell us in the comments.

Guy's been coming to Bristow's for years, and seven of those he's spent out on the track.

It started when Pete got him into racing. He's been at it ever since. Ask him why he stuck with it and it's not about lap times or trophies. It's the fun and the people. Track culture has a way of pulling you in and not letting go.

Glad to have you in the family, Guy. Here's to a lot more seasons.

What got you into the thing you love most? Let us know in the comments.

When was the last time a drive made you forget about everything else?

Pete recently joined friends for a trip through the Colorado mountains, and the scenery alone was enough to make the journey unforgettable.

Towering peaks, endless curves, fresh mountain air, and good company made every mile one to remember.

It's moments like these that remind us driving can still be an experience, not just another part of the day.

Whether it's a weekend getaway or a bucket list adventure, there's something special about taking the scenic route and enjoying where it leads.

Colorado definitely delivered.

Where would your dream road trip take you?
