He’s working on this 1997 4Runner, a vehicle old enough to have decades of stories behind it but still worth putting the time and care into.

Stock or modified?

There is no wrong answer, but there are tradeoffs.

A stock 4Runner is built to deliver dependable performance for hundreds of thousands of miles with proper care. A modified 4Runner opens the door to bigger adventures, but those adventures often place far greater demands on the vehicle.

As Mark explains, it is not the modifications themselves that shorten a vehicle's life. It is how those modifications are used. The harder a vehicle is pushed, the more important proper maintenance, inspections, and repairs become.

Every build tells a story. How long it lasts depends on the chapters you write.

High mileage is not what shortens a vehicle's life.

Neglect is.

A vehicle with 250,000 miles that receives consistent inspections can often outlast one with half the mileage that has been overlooked for years.

That is why Mark believes every older vehicle should be evaluated based on its condition rather than just the maintenance schedule. As vehicles age, they develop unique needs that only careful inspections can uncover.

The earlier those concerns are found, the easier they are to address before they become major repairs.
