He Came In Braced for Bad News

A farmer came in a few weeks before harvest. His truck had been making a noise he didn't like, and he needed it to be solid for the next two months. He walked in the way a lot of people do when they're expecting a big number, already doing the math in his head.

We put it on the hoist, took a look, and the honest answer was: it wasn't as bad as he'd been worrying about. Fixed what needed fixing, told him what could wait and why, and sent him on his way.

His exact words on the way out were pretty much, "Wow, that was way cheaper than I expected."

That's not a bad feeling to send someone off with, especially heading into harvest.

Your Owner's Manual Is Smarter Than an Upsell Script

Most maintenance reminder stickers and service counter suggestions are written for the shop's schedule, not yours. Your vehicle's owner's manual already has a maintenance plan built in, based on how that engine was designed and tested. Ryan's job isn't to talk you into services you don't need yet. It's to look at what you actually drive, how you drive it, and help you follow the schedule that makes sense for your situation.

That said, some intervals in the manual assume ideal conditions. If you're putting on a lot of short trips, hauling loads, or dealing with Iowa winters, "severe service" intervals apply, and skipping them does catch up with you. The honest answer is usually somewhere in the middle.

I Grew Up in This Shop. Thirty Years Later, I Still Show Up Here Every Morning

I was a kid tagging along in this same building back when Roger Bellville and my uncle Gary ran the shop, before I was old enough to know what I was doing, which honestly describes most of my early work. At some point, showing up turned into helping, helping turned into working, and working turned into buying the business in 2018.

I have been full-time in this building since 1998. Same address. Same kind of work. Different knees.

A lot of people ask what keeps a guy in one town, one shop, for that long. Honestly, it's the people. You get to know families over years, not just transactions. You see the same faces at the gas station and the county fair and the school events. That matters more than I'm probably good at saying.

Your Engine Is Probably Dirtier Than You Think

Direct injection engines are everywhere now. Most vehicles made in the last ten or twelve years have one. They're efficient and they make good power, but there's a tradeoff most people never hear about until something feels off.

Older engines ran fuel through the intake valves, which kept them rinsed clean. Direct injection skips that step. Over time, carbon builds up on those valves and inside the intake, and your engine starts working harder than it should. You might notice rough idling, a hesitation on acceleration, or worse fuel economy. Sometimes it's subtle enough that you just get used to it.

A fuel induction cleaning addresses exactly that. It's one of the more overlooked services on a modern vehicle, and it's a lot cheaper than diagnosing the symptoms after they've gotten bad enough to light something up.

If your vehicle has some miles on it and this service has never been done, fall is a good time to ask about it. Before Iowa decides to remind you on its own schedule.

A Good Investment Doesn't Always Have Four Wheels

Every fall, FFA and 4-H season starts rolling again around here, and we're glad to be a small part of that.

Ryan has been supporting these organizations for years, not because it shows up on a billboard somewhere, but because these kids are going to be the farmers, the mechanics, the neighbors, and the business owners of the next generation. Helping them get a decent start seems like the least we can do.

Stuart and the surrounding communities have been good to Gus Auto for a long time now. Sponsoring a few jackets or a project along the way is just our way of returning the favor.

Your brakes worked hard this summer. Here's what to watch for before winter shows up

Summer is tough on brakes. Stop-and-go around town, gravel roads, hauling a trailer or a load of kids to activities. All of it puts real wear on your brake pads, and by the time fall arrives, some of those pads are closer to done than you'd expect.

A few things worth paying attention to: squealing when you first brake in the morning, a grinding noise that doesn't go away, the pedal feeling a little softer than it used to, or the truck pulling slightly to one side when you stop. None of those are things to wait on once Iowa decides to remind you what winter feels like.

This shop has been fixing Stuart's vehicles since the late 90s, and Ryan grew up inside it. He came in as a kid with his dad, went full time right out of high school, and spent more than 20 years learning the trade before buying the place in 2018.

Same bays. Same phone number. A lot of the same customers.
