On this day in 1935, the American Federation of Labor officially chartered the United Auto Workers (UAW) in Detroit, Michigan.

Prior to the dues checkoff system, union members would receive a button every time they paid their dues. This showed that they were current in their dues and was a visual display of solidarity.
