My dad sold cars at a car lot. My mom was a beautician, and she worked for herself.

Growing up in St. Louis, I used to watch my dad work the floor. He was good at it, too. Watching him close a sale was like watching somebody who knew exactly who he was.

He had rough months. Every salesman does. But he kept pushing. No sale didn't mean no effort. It meant tomorrow.

And my mom never punched anybody's clock. Her chair was her business. If she didn't work, she didn't eat. When she did, her clients kept coming back.

I didn't know it then, but the two of them were building a mold for me. One showed me how to keep going when the month is slow. The other showed me you don't need a boss to make a living.

So when it was my turn, working a job never felt like the only option. Betting on myself did.

Shout out to every parent who taught something without ever sitting you down to teach it.

I didn't inherit a business. I inherited the nerve to start one.

I didn't become a mechanic because I loved cars. I became one because I got tired of paying somebody else to break mine.

Years ago my motor locked up. I paid a guy to put another one in. It went bad almost right away.

So I paid him to put a transmission in. That went bad too.

Then I paid him to put an intake manifold on. He broke it.

Three jobs. Three payments. Three times stranded.

Somewhere around number three, I stopped being mad at him and got honest with myself: if I wanted it done right, I had to learn to do it myself.

That frustration paid for my education better than any check I ever wrote him.

Sixteen years later, I'm the guy people call after the last guy got it wrong. And I never forget what it feels like to be on the other side of that.

Sometimes the worst mechanic you ever paid turns out to be the best teacher you ever had.

What's crackin', St. Louis. I'm Chris Miller. A lot of y'all know me as C Millz.

I've been working on cars for 16 years. Ten of those in shops. The last six on my own, running On The Road Again Mobile Mechanic out of my truck: driveways, parking lots, the side of the road, wherever the car decided to quit.

At home it's my wife Nikki, our son CJ, our daughter Lolo, and our youngest, Ca Ca. Nikki and I have been together over 15 years. And three kids don't care how many cars I fixed today. They care if I'm home.

For a long time, the business and the family fought over the same hours. I made a lot of mistakes figuring out how to give both what they deserve. I charged too little. I worked with my heart instead of my head. I stayed on jobs way past when I should've walked away.

For the next 30 days, I'm telling the whole story. How I got here, what it cost, what I learned, and why, after the last car of the day, I now build websites to help other business owners grow.
