🚂🌲 DID YOU KNOW? Some Smoky Mountain Roads Follow Old Railroad Routes? 🌲🚂

Townsend’s history is deeply connected to the logging railroads that once reached far into the Smoky Mountains.

Around 1902–1903, the railroad expanded into the area, and the community became known as Townsend, named after Colonel Townsend.

During the logging era, rail lines were built deep into the mountains to transport workers and equipment in — and haul timber back out to the sawmills. 🚂🪵

The railroad connected Townsend with logging communities such as Elkmont and Tremont, while the company built housing and other facilities for the workers who lived and worked in the mountains.

But here’s the really cool part…

🚂 The railroad wasn’t only used for logging!

Passengers also traveled by rail into the mountains, including visitors heading to resort communities such as Elkmont. What was once a working railroad became part of the early tourism story of the Smokies.

And some roads and trails we enjoy today developed along former logging railroad corridors. Little River Road is one example of a route that follows the path of the old railroad corridor! 🌲

Next time you’re exploring Townsend and the Smokies, take a moment to imagine the trains, workers, lumber, and early mountain travelers that once traveled these same valleys.

💦 1. LAUREL FALLS TRAIL
📏 ~2.6 miles round-trip | Easy to Moderate
A paved trail through mountain laurel leads to the spectacular 80-foot, two-tiered Laurel Falls. One of the most popular hikes in the park!

⛰️ 2. CHARLIES BUNION
📏 ~8.1 miles round-trip | Strenuous
Starting at Newfound Gap, this Appalachian Trail hike takes you through high-elevation forests to dramatic mountain views and the iconic Charlies Bunion rock outcrop.

🪵 3. LITTLE RIVER TRAIL – ELKMONT
📏 ~4.9 miles round-trip | Easy
Follow the rushing Little River through the historic Elkmont area. Along the way, you’ll see historic summer cabins and beautiful mountain scenery without the steep climbs.

📸 HIKER'S TIP: Laurel Falls can get very busy, especially later in the morning. An early start can mean cooler temperatures, easier parking, and fewer crowds!

Just a short drive from Cove Creek RV Resort, Townsend, Tennessee, offers a quieter look at the history and beauty of the Smoky Mountains.

Long before Townsend became a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains, the Little River Valley was home to Indigenous peoples, including the Cherokee. The surrounding area was known as Tuckaleechee Cove, where people lived, traveled, hunted, and farmed for thousands of years. 🏔️

European-American settlers began arriving in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Families settled in the fertile valleys, built log homes, farmed the land, and raised livestock. For generations, life revolved around the mountains, the river, and the changing seasons.

Later, logging and railroads brought another chapter to Townsend’s story, eventually helping transform this small mountain community into a gateway to the Smokies.

Today, Townsend is known as the “Peaceful Side of the Smokies” — a place where you can slow down, enjoy the Little River, explore mountain history, and experience the natural beauty of East Tennessee. 🌲❤️

🌲📜 A LITTLE SMOKY MOUNTAIN HISTORY! 📜🌲

Long before Gatlinburg became one of Tennessee’s most popular mountain destinations, it was a quiet settlement called White Oak Flats.

In the mid-19th century, settlers like Martha Jane Huskey Ogle established homes in the area, surrounded by the forests and mountains of what would eventually become the gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Then, in the 1850s, Radford Gatlin opened a general store and post office in the community. The area was eventually renamed Gatlinburg — and the name stuck! 🏔️

By the early 1900s, Gatlinburg had developed into a hub for Appalachian arts and crafts. That tradition is still alive today in the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, where talented local artists and craftspeople continue generations-old traditions.

When Great Smoky Mountains National Park was officially dedicated in 1940, Gatlinburg began welcoming visitors from near and far. What started as a small mountain settlement grew into the beloved Smoky Mountain destination we know today! 🌲❤️

One of the best parts of visiting the Smokies? You can still find pieces of that history and Appalachian culture throughout the area.
