NYSP Launches Fall 'Safe Speed' Crackdown

ALBANY, N.Y. — The New York State Police kicked off a special six-day traffic enforcement initiative Tuesday targeting speeding and aggressive drivers on highways across the state, according to a news release.
The "Fall Safe Speed" campaign, which runs through Sunday, Sept. 27, aims to curb dangerous driving behavior and enforce New York's "Move Over" Law, state police announced.
Speeding remains a primary hazard on state roadways, listed as a contributing factor in nearly one-third of all fatal crashes statewide.
According to data from the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research at the University at Albany, speed-related crashes in New York resulted in 315 fatal crashes and injured 12,232 people in 2024.
Throughout the enforcement push, troopers are deploying a mix of standard marked patrol cars and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement vehicles. The unmarked CITE vehicles are designed to blend into everyday traffic, enabling officers to identify violators more effectively before activating emergency lights.
In addition to excessive speed across all vehicle classes, troopers are monitoring roadways for distracted and impaired driving, seat belt non-compliance, and failure to yield to emergency and hazard vehicles under the "Move Over" Law.
State police emphasized that the six-day initiative supplements their standard year-round highway safety operations.
