Everyone knows about X pipe exhaust today… BUT nobody knows when it was invented or how.

This is the very first X pipe exhaust ever built by Boyd Butler in 1987. He built it after hours while he worked on Cold War defense projects for Hercules Aerospace for his Shelby GT-350.

The X pipe wouldn’t become known by the world for another 8 years until 1995 when the sound of Sterling Marlin’s Daytona 500 car set the world on fire. Boyd did that too. The man defined a generation of NASCAR sounds with his scientific boom tube designs and so much more.

The full story of Boyd Butler, the X pipe, and the Dr Gas exhaust company just went live. It took me FOREVER to edit it so I hope you like it 😂

People ask “why’d he cheat he didn’t win” but they don’t get how it worked back then. Jimmy Means was a NASCAR rule breaker, not for fun, but as a means to survive.

Back in the day, just making the field for the Daytona 500 was a massive accomplishment.. and paid a LOT of money. For an independent like Jimmy that paycheck set the course for the rest of his season. That’s why he did it. That’s why they ALL did it back then.
