A Blast from the Past: Remembering Bilmore & Son ⚓️
For anyone who spent time in Port Aransas before 2017, you definitely remember the iconic red building on Alister Street.
Opened in February 1954 by the D'Herde family, Bilmore and Son hardware store was an island staple for 63 years. It was the absolute go-to spot for hardware, hunting gear, fishing tackle, and ammunition—not to mention a central hub for local advice, great conversation, and island history.
Sadly, the family wrapped up their multi-generational run and sold the business in July 2017.
Just weeks later, Hurricane Harvey hit the coast, severely damaging the historic structure.
Because of the extensive storm damage, the beloved building was permanently demolished in early 2019.
Port Aransas has changed so much since the hurricane, but the memories of old island landmarks like Bilmore’s and the local families who built them will always remain a piece of our history! ❤️ 🏖️
