YOUR VEHICLE ISN’T MARKING ITS TERRITORY.

Walk outside and find a mysterious puddle under your car?

Before you back out, avoid eye contact with it and tell yourself, “Ehhh… pretty sure that was already there.” 👀

The color might tell you what your vehicle has been trying to tell YOU.

Green, yellow, orange or pink?
Could be coolant. Your cooling system may be thirsty — and pouring more in every few days isn’t technically a repair.

Red or reddish-brown?
Could be transmission or power steering fluid. Neither one should be decorating your driveway.

Brown or black?
Could be engine oil. Your vehicle should not require you to keep a piece of cardboard underneath it everywhere you park.

Clear to light brown and slick?
Could be brake fluid. That’s a “get it checked” problem, not a “turn the radio up” problem.

Clear water?
Finally, one we might not ruin your day with. If you’ve been running the A/C, a little water underneath your vehicle can be completely normal.

So before you blame the dog, your teenager, the neighbor’s car, Mercury being in retrograde, or decide the puddle is none of your business…

WHAT’S THAT SMELL? 👀

Before you start digging under the seats looking for a missing chicken nugget from 2023… it might actually be your vehicle.

And unfortunately, Febreze is not a mechanic.

Sweet smell?
Could be coolant. Apparently antifreeze decided smelling delicious was a reasonable safety feature.

Rotten eggs?
Could be your catalytic converter or even an overheating/overcharging battery. So maybe don’t immediately blame the person sitting next to you.

Burning rubber?
Belt. Hose. Brakes. Something rubbing or overheating.
None of those improve with continued driving.

Burning oil?
Could be oil leaking onto a hot engine component.

Raw gasoline?
Nope.
That one gets checked. We are not playing “let’s see what happens.”

Fishy/electrical smell?
Unless there’s an actual fish in your vehicle, something electrical may be getting too hot.

The point is, your vehicle will usually give you a hint before things go completely sideways.

A light.

A noise.

A smell.

Sometimes all three because apparently the first two weren’t convincing enough.

And if you’ve been driving around saying…

“It’s probably fine.”

…and now it’s sitting on the side of the road being very much NOT FINE…

🏈 IT’S FOOTBALL SEASON IN OKLAHOMA.

And your vehicle is about to put in some overtime.

Your vehicle puts up with A LOT.

It gets you to work when you’d rather call in.

Gets the kids to school, practice, games, and everywhere else they forgot to mention until five minutes before they need to be there.

It carries $300 worth of groceries that somehow becomes four dinners.

It’s heard arguments nobody won, phone calls that should’ve stayed private, and your full-volume concert performances at red lights.

It’s hauled kids, dogs, furniture, fast food, muddy cleats, forgotten backpacks and probably at least one mystery smell nobody wants to claim.

Okay, let’s have a little fun today, in the words of Bon Jovi “we’re halfway there”.

Some of us… uh hmm, the one who posts on this page… are celebrating the 35th anniversary of graduating from PoHi this weekend.

And somehow 1991 was 35 YEARS AGO. 😳

So let’s see the car that carried YOU through the best school year of your life!

Mine was a white early-’80s Thunderbird with a sunroof that probably made more round trips between Grand & the Sailboat side than Ford ever intended. 🤭

And while we’re reminiscing, what was your favorite class?

Mine? Work Release.

Because I got to leave at 12:35. 😂 Apparently I was preparing for adulthood by learning the importance of getting out of work early.
