There’s a moment that happens in almost every build consultation we have.
Someone comes in having done their homework. They’ve watched the videos, saved the posts, maybe even visited a couple of other builders. They know what they want — or they think they do. And then they step inside one of our poptop builds with the top up, and something changes. They go quiet for a second. They look up. They look around. And then they say some version of the same thing.
“I didn’t expect it to feel like this.”
That’s the part we can’t photograph.
Eight feet of headroom. Clerestory windows along the front and sides pulling light in from angles you don’t expect. Cross ventilation that actually moves air instead of just promising it. The outside doesn’t feel like something you’re looking at through a window — it feels like something you’re sitting inside of. The poptop isn’t just a sleeping solution. It completely transforms the living experience of the van.
The Slate Ridge — Model B, 144” AWD, Silver Grey with matte black accents — is the third and final look at this build. And this is the part of the story we most wanted to tell.
We’ve been building Sprinter conversions since 2010. Over 300 builds. Thousands of hours of conversations with clients about how they actually live, travel, and use these vans. Families with kids and dogs and gear that multiplies. Couples who disappear for weeks at a time. Solo travelers who need everything within reach and nothing in the way. Every one of those conversations is in this floorplan.
The 144” poptop is our most versatile build — and the one we believe in most. Here’s why:
• Dedicated upstairs sleeping that stays ready — no teardown, no compromise
• Aluminum panel bed system
• Dinette seating for six
• Open cargo mode with modular storage
• Marine-grade aluminum cabinetry that won’t swell, warp, or delaminate — ever
• Weight management engineered from the ground up, not bolted on at the end
• Suspension matched to tire, load, and real-world use
• Secondary fuel for the miles that matter most
• CruiseNComfort chassis mounted AC system optimized for our poptop models
It parks in a normal space. Fits in most garages. Drives like a daily. And then you pop the top, and it becomes something else entirely.
We’ve spent three posts on this one build this week — and if there’s a through line, it’s this: the best van isn’t the one that photographs the best. It’s the one that earns your trust over time. On the road, off the pavement, five years from now when you’re somewhere you couldn’t have gotten to in anything else.
That’s what we build toward. Every time.
