There are over 5,000 generic and manufacturer-specific OBD-II diagnostic trouble codes in total. 
However, that’s not the full picture. Codes fall into four categories — P (Powertrain), B (Body), C (Chassis), and U (Network/Communication) — and each can be either a standard code or a manufacturer-specific one.  Manufacturer-specific codes vary by brand and are not fully published, so the true total across all makes and models is likely much higher — some estimates put it closer to 11,000+ when all OEM-specific codes are included.
The short answer: 5,000+ standardized codes, with the real-world total potentially more than double that.
