Ever wondered how to "Ferry Glide" your boat into a tight spot using the wind or current? Imagine a spot on a dock with a boat forward of your bow and another boat to your stern and you have to squeeze in.

Here is a good example. See Youtube video link in comments.

If you’ve ever taken a lesson with Captain Mike or Captain Dan, you have heard us say a handful of phrases repeatedly.

Sooo…we are creating a shirt that will help you remember all of our one liners! 😝

• 🔌 Is the plug in?
• 🐢 Slow is pro
• 🛞 Steer then gear
• 🚤 What the bow misses the stern may hit
• 🧭 You’re always steering
• 🌊 Prop wash
• 📍 Hold station
• 🛟 Rudder effect
• ✂️ Chop the throttle

🚤 Boat Propulsion 101: Outboard vs Sterndrive (I/O) vs Inboard

🔹 Outboard – Motor mounted entirely on the transom. Super common on smaller pontoons, fishing boats, and tenders.
✅ Easy to tilt up in shallow water
✅ Simple maintenance & repowering
✅ Great for trailers

🔹 Sterndrive (I/O – Inboard/Outboard) – Engine inside the boat with a drive unit sticking out the back (like a giant outboard leg).
✅ Smooth ride + better handling
✅ More interior space
✅ Popular on larger family runabouts

🔹 Inboard (Direct Drive or V-Drive) – Everything inside the hull (like the Nautique Sport we spotted recently).
✅ Best weight distribution for wake sports
✅ Cleaner transom for swimming/tubing
✅ Premium feel for skiing & surfing

⚓ Practice makes perfect—especially when it comes to docking! 🛥️💨
Check out this snippet of our trainee absolutely nailing the approach and bringing her home like a pro. Mastering the approach, the throttle, and the wind takes time, but that’s exactly what we’re here for at cflboating.org.
Whether you’re a total beginner or just looking to shake off the dock anxiety, our hands-on training gets you confident behind the wheel.
💡 Pro-Tip for the day: Always approach the dock at the slowest possible speed where you can still maintain steerage. As the old saying goes: Never approach a dock faster than you’re willing to hit it! 😉

Successful and comprehensive training today! Jet boats require specific skills that are different from maneuvering an outboard or stern drive vessel. The better skilled you become at safe maneuvering, the more you and your family will enjoy boating. Oh, and by the way, some things we saw today while at the ramp was a person approaching the dock with engine off and using his arms as paddles. Also, a boat was left blocking 1 of 2 dock spaces while he went to the store for 2-stroke oil! Get some training today! 😃
