How Many Miles Will a Non-Sealed Chain Last on a Street Bike?

When used on a street bike, a non-sealed chain will begin to stretch and after approximately 3,100 miles (5,000 km) it can reach the end of its service life.

Although a non-sealed chain may have higher tensile strength than a sealed chain, a sealed chain typically lasts longer. Depending on the type of sealing ring, the service life of a sealed chain can be more than three times longer than that of a non-sealed chain.

Chain stretch is caused by wear on the pins and bushings. As material wears away, the pin shaft rotates in the direction of chain tension. Over time, this accumulated wear along the length of the chain creates what is commonly referred to as “stretch.” Factory-injected grease between the pins and bushings helps reduce this wear; however, without a seal ring, the grease will eventually escape. Once the pins and bushings are no longer protected, wear accelerates and the chain stretches more quickly.

When was the last time you cleaned and inspected your chain?

Rust and dirt buildup can reduce the wearlife of the chain and void your chain warranty. Don't let rust and dirt destroy your chain investment.

ALL chains require maintenance regardless if the chain is sealed or non-sealed. For sealed chains used on the street make sure you are cleaning and lubricating your chain after every 300 miles and after every ride for off-road chains. For street use non-sealed chains you should clean and l**e the chain every 200 miles and after every ride for off-road chains. After rain, make sure to clean and dry the chain then lubricate. When drying the chain – dry all components including the rollers. Color coated chains such as gold and other colors offer better rust resistance than natural color chain, but will still require maintenance.

If you have a sealed chain - always use a motorcycle specific O-ring safe chain cleaner and a motorcycle specific O-ring safe chain l**e.

Don’t Destroy Your Chain Investment!
Today’s chains will give you many miles of riding use – Make sure you don’t ruin your chain investment by installing a new chain on old sprockets or vice versa. Even if the chain happens to fit onto the old sprockets, the old sprockets will make a new chain wear faster reducing the overall life of the chain. This image shows a new chain that won’t fit on the old worn sprocket. Get the maximum life out of your RK Chain by always changing the sprocket whenever you change the chain and keep up on proper chain maintenance. Never connect two different brands of chain and always use the master link specific to that chain model. Using a master link not designed for the specific chain you’re installing can cause a dangerous situation. The model of the master link must match the model of the chain. Even though pitch size is the same, actual chain specs can be very different between models.

Are your chain’s pins rotating?

One of the easier ways to check and see if your chain needs to be replaced is to inspect the quad staked pins on your chain. When a chain is new all the pins will be all aligned and will be parallel. As a chain ages, loses internal lubrication and the internal components start wearing down, the pins can start rotating as seen in the image here. If you have pin rotation on your chain you should replace the chain ASAP.
As a preventative measure, frequent lubrication can delay the onset of rotated pins. For non-sealed chains, internal lubricant can be somewhat replaced by directing the l**e towards the roller and bushing areas on both sides so that the pin will be protected and lubricated. Unfortunately for sealed chains replacing the internal lubricant is not possible.
