The cables in your trunk are not what is starting the car. They never were.
Copper has a fixed resistance and no claim printed on the packaging changes it. Ten-gauge wire runs about 1 ohm per 1,000 feet, and a 12-foot cable set is roughly 24 feet of copper once you count the run out and the run back, which works out to about 0.024 ohms. Push 200 amps through that and you lose 4.8 volts inside the cable itself while dumping 960 watts of heat into the insulation, which is roughly what a hair dryer puts out on high. That is why the clamps on a cheap set get too hot to hold after 20 seconds of cranking, and why the jacket sometimes comes back sticky.
Four-gauge cable cuts the same loss to about 1.2 volts, which is the whole difference between a car that turns over and a car that just clicks at you. Gauge numbers run backwards, so a smaller number means thicker wire, and the jump from 10-gauge to 4-gauge is four times the copper. Ignore the 600 amp rating printed on the bag, because nobody regulates that number and it sits far closer to marketing than to measurement. Look for the actual gauge stamped on the jacket, and buy 4-gauge or thicker in a length of at least 16 feet so you can reach across a parking space without nosing the cars together.
Here is the part almost nobody knows, and it changes how you use the cables you already own. The donor car is not cranking your engine. It is charging your battery. That is why the right move is to connect everything, run the good car at about 1,500 rpm for three to five minutes, and only then turn the key. Your own battery takes a surface charge during those minutes, and it fires the starter through the short, fat factory cables that can actually carry 300 amps over a distance of 18 inches.
Clamp and crank immediately and you are asking a thin length of wire to do a job it was never physically able to do. That is the real reason a jump start seems to fail on a battery that tests fine an hour later, and it is why the same cheap set works on a warm afternoon in a parking lot and quits on a cold morning when the battery underneath it is sitting far deeper down.
