When you see the final price for a repair, it’s natural to ask: “Why does it cost that much?”

Todays Automobiles are much more complex than the vehicles we grew up with and worked on.

Modern vehicles aren’t just machines — they’re rolling computers.

The average new car has 5,000-8,000 Feet of electrical wiring running through it connecting each system enabling them to "Talk" to each other.
(For comparison the average vehicle built in the 1990's likely only had around 1,500 feet of wiring)

It contains 50+ electronic control modules that “talk” to each other.
(For comparison the average vehicle built in the 1990's likely only had around 5 Control Modules)

All of those systems are linked by a high-speed communication system that makes sure your brakes, engine, transmission, airbags, and even power windows all work together in real time.

What looks like a “simple” repair — like a sensor replacement — often requires:

Years of Advanced diagnostic training just to know how to find the correct problem.

Specialized scan tools and software to communicate with the network that costs 10's of Thousands of dollars to purchase and maintain.

So when you pay for a repair, you’re not just covering parts and labor.

You’re buying Years of expertise, Precise Brand Training, High levels of accuracy, and peace of mind knowing that your repair has a Nationwide warranty backed by a powerful brand promise.

That’s the difference between price and value.

Why do more car batteries die in summer than in winter?

Everyone blames freezing mornings when the car won’t start, but summer heat is the real killer. High temperatures ev***rate the liquid inside your battery and speed up corrosion. By the time winter comes, the battery is already weak and struggling to crank.
What to do: Have your battery tested in the summer, keep terminals clean, and check that it’s held down tight.

Why it matters: A quick summer checkup prevents the surprise of a dead car when winter finally hits.

Why do more car batteries die in summer than in winter?

Everyone worries about their battery dying on a freezing morning, but here’s the truth: heat is the real killer. High temperatures ev***rate the fluid inside and corrode the battery plates. By the time winter arrives, the battery is already weak and struggles to crank.

What to do: Have your battery tested in the summer, clean the terminals, and make sure it’s securely mounted.

Why it matters: A five-minute summer check can prevent being stranded with a dead car when the cold finally hits.

At Farris Motor Company, we believe the best way to serve our customers isn’t just fixing cars — it’s helping you avoid problems in the first place.

That’s why we’re starting a new series: simple, free tips to help you understand common repairs, spot problems early, and save money. These are the same issues we see every day in our shop, shared with you so you can make smarter decisions and keep your car on the road longer.

Follow along each week as we share insights that most dealerships would never tell you. And if you’ve got a question about your own vehicle, send us a message — we’ll gladly cover it in a future post.

Because around here, being the Dealer for the People means making sure you feel informed, confident, and in control of your car.

Farris Fact #1
Is topping off my gas tank really bad?

The pump clicks off, and it’s tempting to round up the total.
Overfilling can push raw fuel into the v***r recovery system and charcoal canister, parts designed for v***r, not liquid. That shortens their life and can lead to poor fuel economy and a check-engine light.

What to do: when it clicks off, stop. Tighten the gas cap until it clicks.

Why it matters: a one-dollar “top off” can turn into a few-hundred-dollar repair you never needed.
