SC-14 is a highly effective all purpose cleaner and degreaser specifically designed for applications such as cleaning fire apparatus and removing contaminants. We were recently asked: “What are the pro/cons on the vacuum system vs drafting?” We assume “drafting” is accomplished by the “fire pump”, which is what is most widely used. This pump is great for fighting fires as it is a centrifugal pump that supplies the pressure needed to reach and pe*****te the fire. However, in non-hydrant areas, it is limited in ability and efficiency at getting water because of air leaks, prime loss, and debris.
The vacuum system works independently of the “fire” pump, which may or may not be also installed on a Firovac unit. The vacuum pump merely extracts air from the water tank allowing water to be “drafted”. An air leak will not cause it to lose prime, thereby allowing it to successfully load from most static water sources, as well as dry hydrants. No other source is needed for this, which makes it a non-dependent vehicle (does not need a pumper etc.).
In pressure offloading, the vacuum pump reverses the air movement, so water is discharged from the tank through 6” hose under about 15 pounds pressure. All this is just helping Mother Nature with her gravity system and provides quick, efficient, non-dependent water to fires in non-hydrant areas. Videos can be viewed at Firovac Power Systems.
