Under the current Massachusetts 780 CMR, safety glazing is generally required when a window/glass panel is:

* Within 24 inches of a door and the bottom of the glass is less than 60 inches above the floor.
* Near a bathtub, shower, hot tub, or spa, when the bottom edge is less than 60 inches above the standing surface.
* A large low window where:
* glass area is more than 9 sq. ft.
* bottom edge is less than 18 inches above the floor
* top edge is more than 36 inches above the floor
* and a walking surface is within 36 inches.
* Next to stairs, landings, or ramps when the glass is within the specified distances and less than 60 inches above the adjacent walking surface.
* In doors, storm doors, sliding doors, and certain closet doors.
* In guards/railings, regardless of size or height.

Also, when safety glazing is required, the glass normally needs a permanent safety-glazing identification mark/label showing compliance with the applicable standard.

If you’re asking because you’re tinting a window for a Massachusetts inspection, tint film does not turn ordinary annealed glass into tempere
