A soft brake pedal is one of those signals that's easy to rationalize. You push a little harder, it still stops, so you keep driving.

It reminds me of a screen door that only sticks in summer. You yank it harder each time and call it normal, until the day the frame warps past the point of adjustment and now you need a whole new door.

That sponginess is air or moisture somewhere in the hydraulic line, or a master cylinder slowly losing its ability to hold pressure.

Brakes don't get softer and then get better on their own.

The system was designed so that every millimeter of pedal travel means something specific and when that calibration drifts it is telling you a story you really want to hear while the fix is still small.

If your temperature gauge is climbing while you're sitting in stop-and-go traffic, pull over somewhere safe and let it cool down before you risk serious engine damage. Driving an overheating car even a short distance can warp a cylinder head, and that turns a manageable repair into a very expensive one.

Your cooling system is designed to work hardest at highway speed, where air flows through the radiator naturally. In traffic, your electric fan is doing all the work, and if that fan has failed or your coolant is low or your thermostat is sticking, heat builds with nowhere to go.

A lot of overheat-in-traffic issues come down to something simple like a worn fan relay or a coolant leak that's been slowly getting worse for months.

Get it looked at before summer traffic makes it a daily problem.
