Featured Car of the Week: 2017 Honda CR-V Self Driving Car!!!
Bet you didn't know that CR-V's are now self-driving. Neither did we. A customer tried out a 3rd party app that "converts" your car into a Self-Driving car. Instructions say to wire this device into your car's on-board communications network (CAN bus). Some custom wiring is involved.
Well, the installation did not go as planned and this car was no longer able to start as a result. Even after uninstalling the system, his car still did not work. Like any self-driving system, once ANY sensor quits working, so does self-driving. A little yellow light on the dash and the system is turned off. Self-driving cars will need Helicopter type maintenance (all systems must be maintained perfectly) to keep them running.
It was towed to us for repair. Anytime there are customizations made to the car's electrical and networking systems, we tend to see strange behaviors. Our Master Technicians have seen and been able to solve some of the strangest behaviors. These types of electrical issues require tedious and studious analysis (also read as many hours of time) along with careful wiring repairs to return them to proper operating conditions.
Please be careful with any after-market products that require wiring changes. These often fail costing you hard-earned dollars to repair. We certainly do not recommend any "self-driving" modifications. It seems fun, but can end tragically.
