Rescue 1, was launched in 1985 and quickly became the premier quality manufacturer of Custom Heavy Rescue Apparatus. PL Custom Emergency Vehicles, the parent company of Rescue 1, has been manufacturing emergency vehicles since 1946. Rescue 1 was initially marketed to Fire & Rescue Departments in the Northeast. National distribution of Rescue 1 began in the late 1990’s to accommodate increased prod

uct demand. All rescue body layouts are custom designed for each individual fire department's requirements, supporting their needs for Extrication, Fire Support, Fire Command, Communications, Hazmat, Air and Lighting, etc. Rescue 1 constructs all rescue apparatus to comply with the latest NFPA standards. Rescue 1 specializes in state of the art rescue vehicles. The engineering and production staff dedicate 100% of their resources to the design and manufacture of the BEST rescue units available. Rescue 1, a small manufacturer by design, is able to focus on the customer’s specialized needs. Production schedules are tailored to permit individual Fire Departments to participate in the final design and layout of their Rescue Unit while it is in manufacturing. Rescue 1 maintains a manufacturing facility in Manasquan, New Jersey, less than an hour from a major airport, making vehicle inspection trips easy. This is especially important during the tool mounting phase.

For many years, we here at Rescue 1 enjoyed the guidance, partnership, and friendship that came out of our time and association with George W. Sztykiel. His impact on our industry is undeniable and we want to express our condolences for the loss of such a good man.

REMEMBERING GEORGE W. SZTYKIEL
George W. Sztykiel, pioneering engineer and founding force behind Spartan Motors, passed away earlier this week leaving behind a legacy that reshaped the fire apparatus industry. Born in 1929 in Poland, George survived the hardships of wartime occupation before immigrating to the United States, where he built a remarkable career defined by innovation, resilience, and leadership.
George spent 19 years at Chrysler as an engineer before joining Diamond Reo Trucks. When Diamond Reo declared bankruptcy in 1975, he and three fellow engineers—Bill Foster, Jerry Geary, and John Knox—joined with Form Rite’s Charles McManamey to found Spartan Motors. Their first fire truck chassis, built in a commercial garage and sold to FMC in early 1976, marked the beginning of a company that would become a cornerstone of the emergency vehicle industry.
As President, Chairman of the Board, and CEO, George led Spartan Motors with a philosophy rooted in simplicity, frugality, and engineering excellence. Under his guidance, Spartan became known for its wide, roomy cabs, efficient manufacturing processes, and groundbreaking designs that set new standards for firefighter safety and apparatus performance. Even after passing day to day responsibilities to his son, John Sztykiel, George remained an active mentor and guiding presence within the company.
“George was an extraordinary visionary whose leadership helped shape the modern fire apparatus industry,” said Mike Virnig, President of the Terex Specialty Vehicles Segment. “His relentless commitment to engineering excellence and his unwavering focus on firefighter safety set a standard for the industry. George wasn’t just a leader; he was a steady source of wisdom, humility, and encouragement. I am profoundly grateful for the guidance and friendship he shared throughout the years. His legacy will endure in every chassis built, every innovation inspired, and every firefighter whose life is made safer because of his work.”

Continuing the celebration of our 80th year, let's take a look at perhaps the largest renovation our current building has undergone so far - the construction of our Rescue 1 building addition!

The ground breaking for the massive addition happened on November 29th, 2006. This building initially housed our entire Rescue 1 division, but since then has expanded to also house our chassis prep, water jet cutting, and metals processing. Also currently housed in this building is our Final Delivery / Inspection area.

Unfortunately, Bud Smock did not see the completion of the construction. That's why on September 8th, 2007, the building was dedicated in his honor and nicknamed "Bud's House".

Happy Father's Day!

Rescue 1 is a division of PL Custom Body and Equipment Co., Inc., and since PL Custom is currently in our 80th year as a company, let's take a stroll down memory lane and explore the evolution of our factory locations over the years!

PL Custom originated in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey back in 1946. Bud Smock came on as owner in the 1970s while the business was located in Bricktown, NJ. (You can see Bud in the first pic from 1970!). From there the company grew, moving into larger and larger buildings in Wall Township, NJ to accommodate higher production and more emergency vehicle output.

In 1987 we settled at our current location on Atlantic Ave where we are to this day. Since then we've expanded the building, adding a rescue section onto the back, service up front, and larger parking in the rear to store chassis.

And we're even more excited now, as we progress through our 80th year, to see where the future takes us! We couldn't be happier to have had the pleasure of working with so many great people, departments, and dealers through the years.
