Piaggio’s engineers have created their most compact, lightweight and powerful two wheeled scooter: the Beverly (BV) 350ie.
The BV350 engine actually displaces 330cc and generates 33.3 horsepower at 8250 rpm and 23.8 foot-pounds of torque at 6250 rpm-excellent numbers making for an under-stressed and clearly highly efficient engine. The Italians have increased the already very good thermodynamic efficiency of the BV.
Serious riders will appreciate the BV’s long service intervals: the V-belt only needs to be checked every 12,000 miles, like the rest of the engine.
This new generation BV engine is much lighter than the previous 400cc engine resulting in improved fuel efficiency without sacrificing power: the Beverly weighs 390 pounds, 44 less than the Beverly400, and returns 78.4 miles to the gallon. Given a fuel-tank capacity of 3.4 gal., the bike should go 266.5 miles before refueling is required.
And it really goes! Top speed soars past 90 mph, and acceleration and throttle response are brilliant. The clutch is smooth, snatch-free and precise, and the whole BV is more comfortable than previous versions, thanks to a windshield that is compact but effective.
Safety is paramount for Piaggio. BVs sold in the US are now equipped with ABS that also doubles as ASR traction control. The fat tires (110/70-16 front and 150/70-14 rear) offers plenty of grip for safe cornering. The slightly reduced steering angle and lighter weight of the machine extract extra agility from the chassis.
The above review comes from a 2012 article in Cycle World magazine. According to the author, the Piaggio BV350ie has possibly the best and most-efficient engine in its class.
