The revised version revved faster for a reason.

To install this engine in a Mustang, the front end had to be completely dismantled. Ford sent the partially completed vehicles to an outside contractor; the contractor reshaped the shock towers and relocated the battery to make room—it was a platform never before designed for such a large component.

In the middle of the production process, the internal structure was altered without changing the emblem or documentation. While the first vehicles produced used a heavier rotating assembly, later models—including this fastback—used a lighter design that allowed the engine to rev faster. From the outside, nothing gave this away. Buyers who checked the option box had no way of knowing which version they would receive.

Ford printed “375 horsepower” on the window sticker regardless of which version rolled off the assembly line. Almost none of the owners believed this figure, and for good reason—modified engines running on regular gasoline routinely pushed the power output past 500; race versions, on a good day, exceeded 600. The number on paper was there to keep insurance agents happy, not to explain what actually happened when the throttle was wide open.

A dealership in Iowa sold this car brand-new in February 1969. The car changed hands, aged, and eventually underwent a comprehensive rotisserie restoration that brought its factory-white paint, black interior, and chrome wheels back to their original condition—it still carries the matching-number engine it had when it left the factory and features lighter internal components that allow this version to rev faster than its predecessor.

A single-color paint job and a small fender badge were the only external clues Ford provided. Everything else of significance had been deliberately concealed.

Hidden beneath three vintage-style Rochester air filters is a Holley EFI system; this system delivers 315 horsepower through a Turbo 350 automatic transmission and a 3.08 rear differential. Behind the period-correct Inca Silver DuPont paint and 15-inch EVOD wheels with white-walled radial tires, Wilwood 4-wheel disc brakes provide modern braking power to the heavy chassis.

Inside the cabin, the original-style silver upholstery conceals modern upgrades such as a Wonderbar radio converted to Bluetooth, aftermarket speakers, and a USB port connected directly to the factory cigarette lighter socket.

Factory-installed power windows, power steering, power seats, and air conditioning operate seamlessly without reducing engine vacuum, thanks to a modern electric vacuum pump discreetly mounted out of sight.

In 1959, using three Rochester carburetors on a 348 engine was the ultimate in showmanship on the streets, but it also brought with it constant idle adjustments, v***r lock in heavy traffic, and heavy exhaust smoke.

While building the convertible model to resemble Bob McDorman’s original museum piece, Street Productions discreetly eliminated all the mechanical flaws that made daily driving of big-block cars difficult in the late 1950s.

Ford’s first 427 engine was built in 1963 to definitively win NASCAR races, and it largely succeeded over the course of a season—it secured 23 victories that year, including the Daytona 500; this was an achievement no other manufacturer had managed with its own engines. The engine block first directed oil to the camshaft and valve train; only then did it flow to the crankshaft and main bearings. This configuration worked quite well in ordinary street and truck use.

Constant high-revving races exposed this weakness almost immediately. At speeds exceeding 5,000 rpm for hours on end—which was exactly what NASCAR ovals and Le Mans demanded—sufficient oil did not reach the crankshaft and main bearings quickly enough. As a result, bearing wear and engine blowouts occurred, which weakened a design that would otherwise have been competitive.

Ford’s solution came in 1965: a complete reversal of the lubrication priority—sending oil first to the crankshaft and main bearings, then to the valve train. From the outside, the new block is easily recognizable—a raised cast protrusion on the driver’s side, above the oil pan rail, where the larger oil passage is located. Everything else about the FE family remained familiar; the crucial modification was entirely internal.

In the twin-four-barrel version, the power rating of 425 horsepower for street use was, according to most sources, quite conservative—in reality, it was closer to 475 horsepower as sustainable power rather than peak output. This durability paid off in 1967; Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt secured victory at Le Mans in a Ford GT40 Mk IV powered by a Side-Oiler engine. This was the second of four consecutive victories that made Ford the first American manufacturer to defeat Ferrari at Le Mans.

The same engine block was also installed in Shelby’s 427 Cobra and Ford’s Thunderbolt drag racers; just as it chased down a Ferrari on the Mulsanne Straight, it also chased down Chrysler’s Hemi engine over the quarter-mile. Even sixty years later, that raised cast protrusion on the driver’s side continues to tell anyone in the know exactly which 427 model they’re looking at.

Ford hadn’t built the Boss 429 to be carefully maintained. The main goal was to cram raw NASCAR power into a Mustang body so that Ford could legally race this engine on superspeedways—NASCAR had required Ford to produce at least 500 street-legal cars in order to race with this engine. To fit this engine, the front end had to be completely redesigned; Ford sent partially assembled Mustangs to a specialist shop called Kar Kraft in Brighton, Michigan. Kar Kraft reshaped the strut towers, moved the battery to the trunk, and delivered a car that looked like an ordinary fastback but housed a full-fledged race engine underneath.

Approximately 857 units were produced this way in 1969. Most were driven exactly as Ford had partly anticipated—hard, often, and with little regard for resale value four decades later.

However, one example completely defied this fate. This car left Dearborn in March 1969, was sold brand-new at a dealership in Ohio that April, and at some point along the way, it almost completely stopped racking up mileage—today, the odometer reads 1,287 miles; while this figure might be considered ordinary for a car just a few months old, it’s almost unbelievable for a vehicle nearing sixty years of age.

The original powertrain is still in place; both the engine and transmission are backed by matching serial numbers and a production certificate tracing the car’s history back to the day it rolled off the assembly line. A meticulous restoration brought everything back to factory specifications without removing elements that didn’t need touching—the exhaust emission control system, the original battery, and even the window sticker are still in place. The result has already been recognized by serious Mustang judges as worthy of the highest honors.

The body is finished in Black Jade paint, paired with the original black interior—no repainting is needed, nor is an upholstery replacement required to cover up decades of wear, because there simply wasn’t much wear to cover up. The race suspension, functional front spoiler, and large hood vents are all exactly where Kar Kraft installed them.

Cars built for racing rarely make it to the present day in pristine condition. Most either wear out over time or are modified beyond recognition. Whatever kept this particular example parked for all those years has left behind something that resembles a time capsule more than a mere “survivor.”

However, one engine bay threw a wrench into the works.

Everything above the fenders looks exactly as it should on a 1969 performance Firebird. Rally wheels, dual air intakes, a hood-mounted tachometer, a rear spoiler—the kind of details Pontiac dealers would have gladly highlighted that year. Power steering and front disc brakes still function exactly as Pontiac intended. Bucket seats and a center console fill the cabin as if nothing had changed.

None of this prepares anyone for what’s starting up beneath the hood.

Instead of an engine bearing a Pontiac casting number, a 396 engine is running. Exhaust pipes channel the exhaust, a Turbo 400 transmits power, and a 12-bolt rear axle carries the load—a drivetrain system completely unrelated to the 350 and 400 engines Pontiac produced for this car that year; three different tuning options are available, and it reaches 345 horsepower in the Ram Air IV.

There’s an important footnote here. Pontiac had produced a complete Trans Am package in hopes of competing in SCCA races for 1969, but abandoned the project before a single event even took place. The street cars remained; the passion for racing did not. A Chevrolet engine under the Pontiac hood also holds a similar irony—it was produced in the very year Pontiac quietly shelved its own motorsports plans.

In 1969, brand loyalty ran deep—Pontiac fans wouldn’t put Chevrolet parts under their hoods, and Chevrolet fans wouldn’t touch Pontiac engines. At some point, the people who made these cars simply stopped caring about any of it.

The story underneath goes back further than that.

Regardless of what’s stamped on the fender today, this car rolled off the Hamtramck assembly line in 1971 with a 318 engine under the hood—Plymouth’s standard small-block engine, which was actually the engine most Barracuda buyers received that year. The emblem on it today, however, belongs to an entirely different story.

In 1971, Plymouth produced only about a dozen 426-engine ‘Cuda convertibles, and only three of them had manual transmissions. One of these sold at auction years later for three and a half million dollars; that figure remains a record for the brand and shows just how far collectors are willing to go for a genuine piece.

Now, in its place, sits a newly built, 540-horsepower fuel-injected 426 engine—paired with a computer-controlled automatic transmission and shift paddles that neither Plymouth nor 1971 could have ever imagined. Call this a deliberate tribute—not an “original” pretending to be something it isn’t.

Power is put to the road through upgraded suspension and underbody components, while large brakes handle stopping duties. The blue paint wraps around the body, and the interior carries the same blue theme; here, the power convertible top, modern gauges, and wood-trimmed console coexist with comforts that no 1971 convertible buyer would have found on the order sheet—power windows, keyless entry, and a stereo system that offers more than just AM radio.

A genuine 1971 426 convertible is effectively out of reach today; it remains locked away in collections that most people will never even come close to accessing. This car bearing the emblem will never be that car—and it doesn’t try to be. It simply carries the number in a way that’s more eye-catching than Plymouth ever did.

Nobody bolted a supercharger on in Detroit.

Chrysler built 475 real 426-powered Chargers in 1968 — half a percent of that year's production, topping out at 425 horsepower from the factory. Getting one meant checking an expensive option box and living with an insurance bill to match.

That badge never came in the same form twice. Under the hood now sits a modern take on the idea — a freshly built 426, backed by a supercharger and rated well past 700 horsepower. None of the numbers or the block trace back to 1968. It's a tribute to the displacement, not a survivor of the era.

A heavy-duty automatic handles the power, backed by a nine-inch rear end. The suspension, steering, and brakes all got matching upgrades — power everywhere, stopping power to match the horsepower. Outside, silver paint carries black stripes over a black top, staying close to the factory's second-generation lines. Inside, black leather and suede replace the vinyl bench Chrysler shipped in '68, with modern gauges, a toggle panel, and a sound system built for a different decade entirely.

Custom staggered wheels sit low and wide, wrapped in low-profile rubber that the '68 never offered. Two binders of build photos and receipts go with the sale, tracking every step of the transformation.

Real 426 Chargers get harder to find every year, tucked into private collections most people never see up close. Builds like this keep the shape and the sound alive for the rest of us.

Somebody had bigger plans than 1967 allowed.

In 1967, Ford produced 472,121 Mustangs and offered five different engine options, including the 390 engine with a peak output of 320 horsepower. About 7 percent of these rolled off the assembly line with a manual transmission—most buyers opted for an automatic instead.

Whatever this Fastback originally looked like, nothing is the same anymore.

The engine now has a displacement of 545 cubic inches and is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission—not the automatic transmission Ford typically offered in its showrooms. Power is managed by a limited-slip rear differential mounted on a fully adjustable coilover suspension system featuring wide stabilizer bars front and rear. Large disc brakes sit behind wheels of varying sizes, wrapped in high-grip tires on all four corners.

The body has undergone the same transformation. Flattened panels, recessed door handles, and a hidden exhaust give it a stance that bears no resemblance to the proportions of the 1967 model. Red stripes running down the center of the Raven Black paintwork complement the red leather interior, which features a sound system designed to drown out the exhaust note—with the rear seat completely removed.

Former NFL wide receiver Reggie Wayne is part of this Fastback’s ownership history—just another name on a build list that reads more like a rĂ©sumĂ© than a spec sheet.

Some Mustangs are restored to match the version Ford originally produced. Here, however, the build has taken a direction Ford never offered—and it pulls off that uniqueness exceptionally well.

Stepping hard on the pedal

shows what a 1963 Chevrolet Impala can do when ordered with specific performance upgrades. The floor-mounted 4-speed manual transmission transfers the torque of the 409 V8 engine to the rear wheels, while power steering and power brakes help control the weight and size of this full-size Chevrolet. The factory-installed tachometer on the steering column clearly shows the driver the engine RPM when the gas pedal is pressed.

The white paint keeps the exterior look simple, while the black interior stays true to the original factory appearance.

Inside, the factory-installed bucket seats are positioned on either side of the center console, and the floor-mounted gearshift is exactly where it should be in a 4-speed Impala.

That’s what makes this car special.

Fitting a 340-hp 409 V8 engine and a 4-speed manual transmission into an ordinary full-size coupe created a combination that didn’t need a flashy design to turn heads. The car could wait quietly at traffic lights and still have plenty of power under the hood.

Some cars made their presence known before the light even turned green. This one didn’t.
