Why does stock tuning feel off under load? Toyota builds their trucks to satisfy a wide mix of drivers, fuel economy targets, and durability expectations. That broad factory compromise works fine for a lot of light-duty driving, but towing exposes the parts of the calibration that feel overly cautious or just plain annoying.

The biggest complaint is usually not raw power. It is how the truck delivers it. Press the pedal to maintain speed on a grade and the response can feel delayed. The transmission may bounce between gears trying to decide what it wants. On rolling highways, that back-and-forth behavior gets old in a hurry, especially when you are pulling a camper, utility trailer, or loaded car hauler.

A good tow setup is not only about peak numbers. It is about making the truck easier to drive when there is real weight behind it. That is why calibration matters.
