In the shop this morning...

We’re surfacing the turbo exhaust manifold mounting surface to restore a flat, true sealing surface.

Turbo components see extreme heat and repeated expansion and contraction, which can cause the fl**ge to warp and become uneven.

A new gasket can’t fix a warped surface. Surfacing gives the gasket a proper, consistent surface to seal against, helping prevent exhaust leaks and premature gasket failure.

Flat surface → proper gasket seal → better turbo reliability.

🚤 Boat Engine Cylinder Head Machine Work

This Ford 351 marine engine came in with a worn and damaged exhaust valve seats.

Valve seats take a lot of heat and repeated impact every time the engine runs. Over time, heat, valve movement, poor valve contact, and normal wear can erode or pound the seat, eventually preventing the valve from sealing properly.

So what do we do?

🔎 Inspect.
⚙️ Cut out the old seat.
🔩 Install a new seat.
🛠️ Cut it to the proper angle and width so the valve seals correctly.

A new seat isn't just a replacement part the machining is what makes the repair work.

A client of the shop asked me to share this story...

Truck comes in 300k miles with the scars along the way that show it, truck had been treated as a parts bin that people had taken parts off of and swapped their garbage back on to it. The client wanted the truck to run well again so that they could enjoy off road time with their kids.

Given the age of the truck no OBD diagnostic system was going to be of any help.

The technician brought out the thermal imager in order to see the problem and figure out the actual problem and rule out causes. This showed us that the cylinder 4 injector was not firing, due to a damaged wire.

In the end, we would a small section of damaged wiring and two sensors were sending bad data to the brain leading to reduced performance.

Here at Wilson Auto Tech, we would like to solve the actual problem, instead of trying to treat symptoms.

At Wilson Auto Tech, we keep a wide variety of fluids in stock to service the many different vehicles found throughout the Quad Cities. And we're always looking for an excuse to stock another one. 😂

There is no monopoly on who is allowed to take care of your vehicle.

As the owner of your vehicle, you get to decide who you trust to work on it.

Why should a manifold be surfaced?

BEFORE
Years of heat cycles and corrosion can leave the sealing surface warped, uneven, and pitted. A new gasket can't correct a bad surface.

DURING
After just one pass, you can see the high spots contacting the sander while the low areas remain untouched. This shows how uneven the manifold really was.

AFTER
The finished surface is flat, clean, and consistent, giving the new gasket a proper surface to seal against.

New gaskets are great but a new gasket doesn't fix a bad surface.
The gasket needs a good surface to do its job.
