There's a lot of noise out there telling young people the only path runs through a screen.

We see it a little differently.

Learning to diagnose a problem, turn a wrench, and stand behind your work builds something no app can hand you: real skill and real confidence.

Nobody starts out knowing everything. You start by showing up, asking questions, getting a little grease on your hands, and doing it again tomorrow.

Last November, a group of neighbors put weight on their backs and walked the White River Trail for the 22 veterans we lose every day. This year the walk is growing, and it's because of the people who stepped up first.

Parts is one of those jobs nobody thinks about until it goes sideways. The right part, right vehicle, here when we said it'd be here. She's got it handled, and the techs stay busy because of it.

She just knows the shirt smells like the shop and that if she sits still long enough somebody gives her a treat.

But we know. Twenty-two veterans a day. That's the number behind everything we do on the first Saturday of November.

Six miles on the White River State Trail. Ruck or no ruck — carry what you can. Mike leads, and one of our crew walks last so nobody is ever behind him.

Nobody follows an auto shop for pictures of brake rotors.

You follow for the people. For Lauryn and Leigha. For Luna, 100 pounds of quality control, holding down a whiskey barrel on Friday.
