Some in-process pics of the Magnesium Eagle. I started with a dark sealer, then applied the white in the areas where it would be needed. The circle areas where numbers would be (aka Meatballs or Roundels) are plain white. So those were laid down first. Then, the stripe areas received a few coats of white pearl before the layout began. Could have gone a few different orders or directions here but it’s really all semantics.

The stripe appears straight front to back with the naked eye, but they actually had very specific notes about its widths and it varies up to 1/2” wider or narrower as it goes from tip to tail.

They also had very strict rules about the radius of the two tone line where it turns to wrap the ‘mouth’ at the front of the nose. The width of the white ‘lipstick’ was also very specific, and was not to carry into the nose farther than seen. In other words, the inside of the ‘mouth’ was to stay blue with only a white outline, NOT white all the way into the mouth which is likely what I wouldn’t have defaulted to without the paperwork.

The yellow circles I cut from premask at the degrees of the radius requested and used them as guides for laying the stripes. What seems all very obvious and not notable in its finished form, was all very much intentional and completed Dan and Justin’s visions.

Ok. After this, you’ll start seeing the color process. But, this was a wild chapter in the car: saving the rivets.

The lower holes you see are where this canopy would eventually be hard riveted to the tub. As such, those rivets would naturally be bare. Therefore, it was asked that all the other rivets in this area be left unpainted as well. So, after each stage of the painting process, every one was hand masked using these (thank god) pre-cut masking tape circles.now, this made life much easier. But, when you are laying a couple hundred of them, tedious comes to mind. Then of course removed after primer and then the process repeated for painting. Then, the cautious removal of them after paint. It was an interesting challenge, but if you’ve seen the complete photos, well worth the effort. Oh, and a pic of the nose after bodywork and prep, ready for paint.

This shows the tub after all of the black oxidation was removed. Nice and bright and shiny! We then used a chemical conversion coating which allows for adhesion and corrosion protection. It’s hard to see in photos but it turned the metal a goldish brassy color. I forget what the product was called now, but we followed the guidelines provided. (EDIT: it was Alodine I believe ). This process was done to all the magnesium body panels. The aluminum stuff I used traditional methods.

Here we can see the tub when first removed from the crates. The blackness of the sheet metal is actually the decades of oxidation of the magnesium.

The first step was to mask off everything that wasn’t getting painted, which may sound obvious. But in the case of this car it was very important to preserve all of the oxidized bare magnesium. After all those decades, it would have been a shame for me to accidentally bump an area meant to be unpainted with my sander and damage it. Unlike most vintage cars I do, all of the interior and engine bay etc was to be left raw and unpainted. So it was masked tight right away and not unmasked again until final cleanup before delivery. The next update you’ll see how much the magnesium cleaned up prior to chemical treatment and primer.

OK! It’s finally time to reveal! Surely you all remember the ‘car in a crate’ that arrived last year that I was sworn to secrecy on? It made its debut this weekend at Elkhart Lake at the Dan Gurney / Eagle & AAR reunion at Road America. I’ll be sharing lots of photos as they become available to me in the coming days, as well as photos of it here getting restored at the Indy Powder Coating paint shop.

This is Dan Gurneys abandoned project: an all magnesium 1969 V12 powered Eagle that was intended to compete in F1, but was shelved and not seen again for decades. Dans son Justin decided to finish his father’s vision and see the car to completion for the first time. The car was preserved as built in 1969, and had never reached the point of being painted. So I had the honor of seeing and appreciating this car untouched, and subsequently painting this car for the first time ever, following the very strict guidelines set by Dan and Justin and the restoration crew that were given to me.
