This little light of mine 🎶
There are many misconceptions about how shops can decode this light, and us know what to do to fix the vehicle.

The OBD port in your computer is a direct line to your vehicle's communication. Big box stores often advertise 'free diagnostic.'
They are equipped with code readers that will read the DTC (diagnostic trouble code) that is stored on your computer.
That is where it ends and where we come in.
DTC's are only the beginning and basically clues on where to start component testing.
I know, I know. It means we actually have to work for the diagnostic that we charge. So, wack. But it is completely worth it.
Technicians rely on electrical diagrams, oscilloscopes, OBD code readers, and more to narrow down the exact failure. Without testing, many components would be replaced that aren't needed. That could add up quickly and cause a significantly longer down time.
We prefer the quicker option that allows us to get you back in your car. While diagnostic fees can seem excessive, they can save you thousands in the long run.
Last but not least!
When you do have codes stored and intend to taking the vehicle to a shop, please leave the codes. They will come back but it saves time if we don't have to wait on that. Clearing codes does not fix a failure but it will prevent us from knowing where to start in a timely manner.
