🚗 Transmission Flush vs. Drain & Fill — What’s the Difference?
We get asked about transmission flushes pretty often, so here's why ATM Transmissions typically recommends a drain & fill instead.
A transmission flush uses equipment to circulate fluid through the transmission and replace a larger amount of the old fluid at one time. While that may sound better, it isn't always the best approach—especially on higher-mileage vehicles or transmissions with an unknown service history.
With a drain & fill, we drain the fluid that can be removed normally and refill the transmission with the correct manufacturer-specified fluid. When applicable, this also gives us the opportunity to remove the pan, inspect its condition and replace the transmission filter.
Most importantly, transmission service is maintenance—not a repair for an already failing transmission. If your vehicle is slipping, shuddering, shifting hard, making unusual noises, or already has transmission-related codes, we recommend having it diagnosed before assuming fresh fluid will solve the problem.
At ATM Transmissions, we'd rather recommend the service that makes sense for your vehicle than automatically put every transmission through the same process.
