The Charles County Fair in LaPlata re-opens today at 8:30am and continues all weekend.

Every autumn, the So. Md. fairs draw well over 100,000 visitors, celebrating the region’s rich agricultural heritage, youth 4-H programs, and community traditions.

The Charles County Fair and the St. Mary’s County Fair each attract up to 50,000 guests annually over their four-day runs. Combined with tens of thousands of attendees at the Calvert County Fair, these autumn traditions bring local families together for livestock shows, carnival rides, and seasonal festivities.

County Fair Season begins tomorrow with the start of the Charles County Fair!

Have you ever wondered where the first county fair in America was held?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝘁𝘀𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱, 𝗠𝗔, 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟴𝟭𝟭. Organized by 𝗘𝗹𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗵 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝘀𝗼𝗻—a visionary merchant and farmer known as the "𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗨.𝗦. 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀"—the Berkshire County Cattle Show aimed to modernize regional farming. Watson invited local farmers to display livestock, exchange practical agricultural methods, and compete for cash prizes. By incorporating educational exhibits, sheep-shearing demonstrations, and activities designed to attract women, Watson transformed traditional market gatherings into a lively, community-wide tradition that quickly spread across New England and shaped rural American culture.

The Charles County Fair opens tomorrow (Thursday) at 4pm in La Plata and runs through Sunday. St, Mary's is the following week, and Calvert's fair begins October.
