While AWD and 4WD improve traction during acceleration, they don't help with braking or cornering which is where worn or heat-degraded tires can fail you. AWD with worn tires is still a safety risk as front tires typically wear faster due to steering and braking force with AWD/4WD. This makes tire rotation even more important.
