⛵ **Points of Sail** show how a sailboat moves in relation to the wind.

From close-hauled to beam reach, broad reach, and running, each angle changes how we trim the sails and control the boat. Understanding these points helps every sailor sail smarter, safer, and with more confidence.

The answer is: Any time you begin to move forward, the wind you feel changes direction to come from a direction more in front of you. (That’s what “apparent wind shifts forward” means) .... Think of a car, as the car speeds up you feel the wind more on your face. As the car speed up to 100 mph it is almost directly on your face even if the cross wind was sideways or even from behind. So in the example if the true wind was at B (what you feel when you are stopped) and then the boat speeds up to 5 knots, the apparent wind can not possibly be from your side - it must be from a direction more in front of the true wind. The only possible solution is that the true wind (the wind when the boat is stopped) must be coming from over behind your left shoulder (position A). As the boat speeds to 5 knots the apparent wind shifts to come from more from the front of the boat when it gets to 5 knots it is from abeam - if it shifted to say 10 knots then it would come from about B. If the boat sped to 100 mph, it would be coming from almost the bow.

Hoisting a radar reflector aloft—typically up a backstay or flag halyard—is a great way to ensure smaller vessels are visible on ship radar. The process involves assembling a bridle, positioning the reflector correctly (the "catch rain" position), and securing it tightly to prevent swinging in heavy winds
