As many of you have probably seen, there are reports circulating on social media about an alleged incident in the Taneytown area involving a white camper van and an attempt to lure children. Whether these reports are ultimately confirmed or not, it's an important reminder to stay alert, talk to your children about stranger safety, and report any suspicious activity directly to local law enforcement.
As someone who builds and loves custom vans, I also want to say something else. Incidents like this—if true—don't just hurt the victims and their families. They unfairly cast a shadow over an incredible community of van owners, travelers, campers, and builders who use their vehicles to explore, work, volunteer, and make memories with their families.
The "van life" community is made up of some of the kindest, most adventurous people you'll meet. It's heartbreaking when the actions of one individual can create fear and tarnish the reputation of thousands of responsible owners.
Please stay vigilant, look out for one another, teach your children about personal safety, and if you witness suspicious behavior, contact your local police immediately rather than relying solely on social media.
Our thoughts are with the families in the Taneytown community. Let's keep our kids safe while remembering not to judge an entire community by the alleged actions of one person.
