A hospital parking structure serves three different demand patterns through one entrance.

Patients arriving for scheduled appointments, with accessibility and wayfinding requirements that cannot be negotiated.
Visitors arriving in waves around visiting hours.
Staff on shift changes, parking for long and predictable periods.

Medical campuses carry high traffic volumes on constrained land. Patient volumes keep growing. Available land does not.

Automated parking systems address the supply side of that. Capacity comes from the volume already available rather than from additional footprint. Vehicles are not circulating inside the structure to find a space, so congestion drops at the point where patients and visitors are entering. Puzzle systems operate without an attendant, which reduces the staffing the facility has to carry.

Automation is often discussed in terms of speed.
But speed is only one part of performance.

A warehouse automation system also needs to be:

🟧 Integrated - equipment and software need to communicate.
🟧 Maintainable - problems should be addressed efficiently.
🟧 Scalable - the system should accommodate operational growth.
🟧 Supported - there needs to be accountability after commissioning.

That is why warehouse automation is not simply an equipment purchase.
It is an operating infrastructure decision.

The engineering, integration, commissioning and support model all contribute to the system's performance over time.

"What's your cost per space?" It is the first question we get about puzzle parking. It is also the wrong one.

Cost per space is an output, not an input. It falls out of 5 configuration decisions your architect makes at schematic design, long before anyone quotes a component.

Each one is fixed on a drawing months before a vendor is contacted. Each one is far cheaper to change at schematic than at construction documents.

Automation isn't about adding one smart machine.
It's about making the entire process work together.

In a hashtag environment, that can mean mechanical equipment, sensors, software, kiosks, mobile interfaces and service working as one system.

In a hashtag , it can mean AS/RS, conveyors, AMRs, sortation, controls and WMS connectivity working together.

The technology matters. But integration matters just as much.

When everything works together, you get fewer handoffs, smoother workflows, better visibility and a system that's easier to operate and scale.

That's the real value of automation: not more technology, but less friction.

Arrival is where hospitality projects either work or create friction. Valet stacking in a porte cochere. Guests circling a ramp with luggage still in the car. A garage occupying ground floor frontage that could have been a restaurant.

Automated parking changes the arrival sequence.

The guest pulls into a bay room at grade. Leaves the car. Walks into the lobby. Retrieval is requested from the front desk, an app, or a kiosk, and the vehicle returns to the same bay.

Valet operations still function. They require less floor area to run, because attendants are not driving vehicles through levels of a garage.

For the design team, the effect shows up on the plan.
Ramps and drive aisles come out.
Circulation area drops.
Ground floor frontage stays available for revenue-generating program.

On constrained urban sites, parking is one of the few line items where footprint and arrival experience are addressed by the same decision.

One of the most expensive parking decisions can be made before the parking garage is even designed: Choosing the parking strategy too late.

By then, the project may already be built around a structural grid, ramps, circulation, MEP and other parking constraints.

At that point, parking isn't helping shape the design.
It's trying to fit into it.

The better approach is to ask early:
1️⃣ How much parking is actually needed?
2️⃣ When will demand peak?
3️⃣ How much space will circulation consume?
4️⃣ And what could the project gain if parking occupied less space?

Because the right parking strategy isn't just about storing cars.
It can change what you can do with the building.
