Many vehicles use drum brakes on the rear, and just like pads and rotors, the brake shoes can wear out over time.

But it’s not just the shoes! The springs, clips, adjusters, and other hardware can also become worn, rusty, or damaged. When this happens, your parking brake and braking performance can be affected.

🚨 Signs to watch for:
• Squeaking, grinding, or unusual noises
• Parking brake not holding properly
• Vehicle pulling or braking unevenly
• Excessive rust or damaged hardware
• Rear brakes not operating as they should

LET’S TALK WHEEL BEARINGS!

We recently had a vehicle come in with a wheel bearing that was badly worn and definitely needed to be replaced.

Replacing a wheel bearing isn’t always a quick job—especially here in Ohio! 🧂❄️

This particular bearing was severely rusted and damaged, making removal much more difficult than normal and adding extra labor time to the repair.

⚠️ Bad wheel bearings can cause:
• Humming or grinding noises
• Vibration while driving
• Excessive play in the wheel
• Uneven tire wear
• Potential safety concerns if left unattended

👉 If you hear a humming, grinding, or growling noise that changes with your speed, don’t ignore it! Have it checked before a small problem becomes a bigger repair.

LET’S TALK TIRES: WHAT DOES THAT 4-DIGIT NUMBER MEAN?

Ever notice a 4-digit number on your tire sidewall? It tells you when the tire was manufactured!

📅 For example:

👉 5018 = 50th week of 2018

👉 1701 = 17th week of 2001

⚠️ A tire from 2001 is extremely old and should not be used, even if it still has good tread.

When checking your tires, don't just look at the tread! Also check for:
✅ Cracking/dry rot
✅ Uneven wear
✅ Damage or bulges
✅ Age

LET’S TALK TIRES: DRY CRACKING & DRY ROT

Your tires can have plenty of tread left and still need to be replaced!

Over time, exposure to sunlight, heat, weather, and age can cause the rubber to break down. This is called dry rot or dry cracking.

🔍 What should you look for?
• Small cracks in the sidewalls
• Cracks between the tread blocks
• Rubber that looks dried out or brittle
• Bulges or other signs of deterioration

⚠️ Why does it matter?
Dry-rotted tires can become weaker and are more likely to fail, especially at highway speeds or under heavy braking.

👉 Remember: Tread isn't the only thing that matters! Tire age and condition are just as important when it comes to your safety.
