What does it cost to live without a car?

Sometimes, it’s a paycheck that never comes because getting to work isn’t possible. Sometimes, it’s turning down a better job, missing an important appointment, or spending money on rides that was meant for groceries or bills.

For our neighbors facing these challenges, transportation can shape what’s possible in their lives.

At Second Chances Garage, we see the people behind these challenges. People who are working hard, raising families, rebuilding, and doing everything they can to create a better future.

A vehicle won’t solve every problem. But it can remove a significant obstacle and give someone room to breathe, plan ahead, and take their next step.

That’s the kind of difference our community makes.

Rick, the founder of Second Chances Garage, may have recently retired from his long career at B*K, but he hasn’t retired from giving back!

Rick consistently stops by the shop to lend a hand, and last week was no exception. He helped prepare Danielle’s vehicle for delivery and spent time with her on presentation day, walking her through the car’s features and explaining the essential things to watch for to keep her vehicle safe and running well.

From preparing the car to helping Danielle feel confident behind the wheel, Rick continues to share his time, knowledge, and heart with Second Chances Garage.

Rick is part of the foundation of our success, and he will always be part of the SCG family. Thank you, Rick Trawick for continuing to show up for our mission and the people we serve!

You too can help support our mission! Every dollar counts! https://secure.qgiv.com/for/secondchancesgarage/

Yesterday, Danielle received her car, and with it, a little more freedom to keep building the life she is working so hard for.

Danielle has faced addiction, grief, and difficult seasons, but she has made a commitment to her recovery and to creating a stable future for herself and her family.

Reliable transportation will help Danielle get to work, stay connected to her recovery community, manage her family responsibilities, and continue working toward financial independence. She also dreams of giving back, using her own experiences to support others who are finding their way through recovery.

Danielle knows a car won’t do the work for her. She’s doing that work every day. But having reliable transportation can help her turn her determination into action.

Danielle, we’re grateful to be part of your journey. We believe in the work you’re doing and the future you’re building. Here’s to new opportunities, continued growth, and the chance to one day help someone else find their way forward.

Your donation. Their second chance.

Raw and real. Today’s car presentation with Divad.

Divad’s story is about rebuilding, reconnecting with family, and creating new opportunities.

Without a vehicle, Divad has relied on ridesharing, public transportation, and walking, all of which can be expensive or inefficient. Having a car will help him save money, pursue employment opportunities farther from home, and take his daughter places without relying on his mother for transportation.

Today, Divad received the keys to a 2006 Hyundai Sonata donated by The Safe Ride Foundation!

And this is what community looks like when everyone plays a part.

❤️ SOS Safe Ride - a program of The Safe Ride Foundation, through Wayne Dorsey, donated the vehicle.

❤️ Rides For Good - a program of The Safe Ride Foundation helped Divad access transportation along the way.

❤️ United Way of Frederick County, Maryland Pathways to Transportation program provided financial and budgeting coaching to help Divad strengthen his financial future.

❤️ Second Chances Garage refurbished the vehicle and brought these pieces together to help make reliable transportation possible.

Different organizations, working together toward one goal: helping Divad move forward.

We’re grateful to Wayne Dorsey, The Safe Ride Foundation, United Way of Frederick County, and everyone who helped make this possible.

This is what happens when a community comes together to remove barriers and create opportunities.

A little car tip from Second Chances Garage!

Did you know that letting a car sit too long can actually cause problems? Even if it’s not being driven, things can start to go wrong. Batteries die, tires develop flat spots, fluids deteriorate, and rubber components can dry out.

If you have a vehicle sitting in your driveway that you haven’t driven in months, it might be time to ask yourself: Am I really going to drive this again?

The sooner you make that decision, the better. And if you’re ready to let it go, consider donating it to Second Chances Garage - so it can have its red bow reveal!

Your donation. Their second chance.

When my family moved to Frederick after my parents divorced, our lives changed in ways I never imagined. Without reliable transportation, getting to school, work, and even completing everyday tasks became a constant struggle. I spent years relying on public transportation, walking for hours, and spending much of my paycheck just to get where I needed to go.

I worked hard to save enough money to purchase my first car, only to discover it was lemon. I lost all my savings and felt like I was back at square one.

After graduating from high school, I was determined to continue my education at Hagerstown Community College to become an X-ray technician. I wanted to be the first in my family to attend college, but without a vehicle, I wasn't sure how I would make it to classes while continuing to work and help support my family.

Second Chances Garage gave me an opportunity that has changed so much for me and my family.

Before receiving my car, I had to wake up nearly two hours before class just to make sure I arrived on time. Now, I can get ready and leave just 45 minutes before class. I have more time to rest, less stress, and the freedom to focus on my education and my future.

But the biggest difference is what having a car has allowed me to do for my family. As the only person in my household with a driver's license, I can now take my mom and siblings to appointments, help with grocery shopping, and make sure they get where they need to go.

This car hasn't just given me independence. It's given me the ability to help my family become more independent, too.

I am so grateful to Second Chances Garage, the car donor, donor's and grant funders for believing in me and helping me move forward. Having reliable transportation has given me the freedom to work toward my goals, continue my education, and be there for the people who depend on me.
