The condition described is consistent with fuel v***r lock or EVAP purge valve behavior on a hot restart. Here is what is happening: after a hot soak, fuel in the fuel rail has been exposed to elevated underhood temperatures and has partially v***rized. When the engine starts, the fuel injectors initially receive a mix of liquid fuel and v***r — which causes an inconsistent combustion event that stalls the engine almost immediately. The second start succeeds because cranking has purged the v***r from the rail and restored solid fuel delivery. On the 5.3L Ecotec3 in the Tahoe, a leaking or stuck-open EVAP purge valve is a documented contributor to this symptom — an open purge valve allows fuel v***r from the charcoal canister to enter the intake manifold during a hot soak, creating an over-rich condition on the first start that floods the engine briefly. A technician would command the purge valve open and closed using a scan tool to verify it is sealing correctly when commanded closed. Fuel rail pressure bleed-down testing after shutdown confirms whether the fuel pump check valve is maintaining pressure through the hot soak. Either finding directs the repair accurately without replacing parts unnecessarily.
