Feeling a shudder in your steering wheel or hearing a squeak when you slow down? It might not just be worn pads—your brake rotors take the brunt of stopping your vehicle.
If your brakes feel off, look out for these four rotor red flags:
> Warping: A pulsating pedal or shaking steering wheel down coastal hills caused by uneven heat cycles.
> Glazing: A mirror-like, glass sheen from extreme heat that hardens the pedal, increases stopping distance, and causes squealing.
> Lipping: A distinct, raised ridge along the outer rim. If you can catch your fingernail on it, the rotor has worn significantly deep.
> Minimum Thickness: Rotors worn below their stamped factory discard spec can't shed heat, risking severe brake fade or cracking during hard stops.
Slapping fresh brake pads onto compromised rotors ruins the new pads in a matter of weeks.
