After months of drought and dry roads, North Texas is preparing for several inches of much-needed rain.

But there’s something drivers need to know:

⚠️ The first rain after a long dry spell can make roads extremely slick.

Oil, rubber, dust and other residue build up on pavement during extended dry periods. When rain begins, that buildup mixes with the water and can create a slick surface — especially during the first hours of rainfall.

PLEASE TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS:

🚗 SLOW DOWN — Even if you’re driving the speed limit, it may be too fast for wet conditions.

↔️ INCREASE FOLLOWING DISTANCE — Give yourself considerably more room to stop.

🛑 BRAKE EARLY & GENTLY — Avoid sudden braking, acceleration and sharp turns.

💧 WATCH FOR STANDING WATER — Hydroplaning can happen quickly, and water may be deeper than it appears.

🌊 NEVER DRIVE THROUGH FLOODED ROADWAYS — Turn around and find another route.

💡 TURN ON YOUR HEADLIGHTS — Make yourself easier for other drivers to see.

📵 PUT THE PHONE DOWN — Wet roads require your full attention.

🚘 CHECK YOUR TIRES — Proper tread depth and tire pressure are especially important on wet pavement.
