For this week's Nature in Focus, we will feature the white top pitcher plant. Many different kinds of pitcher plants can be found at the preserve, including the purple top, parrot, and hybrid pitcher plants. However, the white top is the most distinctive. These tall pitcher plants have beautiful networks of red veins on their white upper section. The pitcher part of the plant is not a bloom but a modified leaf.

Pitcher plants are carnivorous plants. They attract insects by producing sweet smelling nectar through their glands. Inside the pitcher are downward facing hairs that prevent the insects from crawling out. Enzymes are used to digest the insects.

Fun Fact: Pitcher plants greatly benefit from prescribed burns. Prescribed burns help reduce competition from tall growing and invasive plants. It also provides the open and sunny habitat that pitcher plants prefer.
