A Ford F-150 runs on more than 100 million lines of code. Finding someone qualified to work on it is getting harder.
Ricart Automotive Group decided years ago that waiting for trained technicians to show up wasn’t a sustainable plan.
Through partnerships with ASE and Columbus State Community College, the group has built roughly 75% of its Ford technician workforce in-house. That pipeline now supports a 113,000-square-foot Ford Pro Elite facility with 64 bays and seven mobile service vans.
The program has been running for 10 to 15 years, which is part of the point. Technician development takes time, and the labor pool dealers are competing over isn’t getting any bigger.
There’s also a new type of technician entering the picture. Vehicles increasingly require people who are comfortable with mechanical work, software and electronics.
Dealers planning to grow service capacity five years from now may need to start building the people who will fill those bays today.
