Your check engine light came on. Now what?
Here's what it actually means β and what it doesn't.
It does NOT mean: pull over immediately (unless other warning lights are on too or the car is running rough)
It DOES mean: your car's computer detected something outside normal range, and it needs to be read with a diagnostic scanner to know what
Common reasons it comes on:
π§ Loose or faulty gas cap (most common, easiest fix)
π§ Oxygen sensor issue
π§ Catalytic converter failing
π§ Spark plugs or ignition coils
π§ Mass airflow sensor
π§ EVAP system leak
The problem is, you can't tell which one it is just by looking at it. That's what diagnostics are for.
If it's solid, you have time to schedule. If it's flashing, get it in immediately β a flashing check engine light means active misfires that can damage the catalytic converter fast.
We diagnose check engine lights for Cincinnati drivers β same-day in most cases.
