Kids Boating 101 Episode 4: Docking!

Docking can feel intimidating, but with the right preparation and a little practice, you can make it smooth and controlled.

✔️ Before you approach the dock, make sure your fenders are out and your dock lines are ready to go.
✔️ Whenever possible, approaching the dock against the current gives you more control and makes it easier to maneuver the boat into position.
❗️REMEMBER: Never go as fast as you’re willing to hit something❗️
✔️ Bump the boat into forward, then back to neutral as needed. This allows you to make small adjustments while maintaining a safe approach speed.
✔️ As you get closer to the dock, putting the boat into reverse while turning the motor toward the dock can help bring the boat into alignment for a smooth landing.
✔️ Having someone waiting at the dock to grab a line and help you tie up is always a nice added bonus.

The key to docking is to remember to stay calm, go slow, and make small adjustments!

Episode 3: Boat Handling, Creek Safety & Float Plan!

The kids walk you through some of the basics of boat handling- from steering and throttle control to understanding why your speed and your wake matter. When passing docks or sometimes other boats, be mindful of your wake and the impact it can have. You also need to be watching for other boats, especially when approaching a blind bend in the creeks. Slow down, give yourself plenty of room, and be prepared for another boat coming from the opposite direction. Set yourself up to safely maneuver before you reach that creek bend!

We may have all learned the hard way where some of the sandbars, mudflats, and oyster beds are located….but you don’t have to! Listen to when someone tells you where the water gets shallow, pay attention to the tides, and watch how the water is moving. Changes in the water can be a great clue that shallow water is ahead. One of the best ways to learn your local waterways is to cruise them at low tide.

Always let an adult know where you’re going! Give an adult your flat plan. Let them know where you’ll be, who you’re with, and where you’re headed - whether that’s cruising around the creek or meeting your friends at the rope swing!

Knowing the waterways, paying attention, and communicating your plans are all part of becoming a safer and more confident boater.
