After years of standardization, BN began to experiment with new locomotive paint schemes in the 1980s. The Tiger Stripe scheme was an attempt to improve grade crossing visibility; the later “White Face” scheme was an outgrowth of this idea. Several SD40-2 units received this scheme before the BNSF merger.

The Reading & Northern Railroad (RBMN) operates a fleet of EMD GP38-2 locomotives that serve as versatile 2,000-horsepower road switchers for both freight and passenger operations across Pennsylvania. Among the most recognizable is #2026, unveiled in a patriotic paint scheme celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence. RBMN GP38-2 locomotives are assigned as needed to the railroad’s passenger excursion trains—including Lehigh Gorge excursions—as well as general freight service, reflecting RBMN’s practice of using its locomotives in mixed-service assignments rather than dedicating them exclusively to passenger or freight operations. Pre-orders for the Reading & Northern GP38-2s end on Saturday, October 31st.

The Milwaukee Road was a repeat EMD customer up until its demise. Along with a large group of 4-axle units and specialized branch line power, the road rostered many SD40-2 locos, which were primarily assigned from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest.

Join us Tuesday October 13th at 7:00pm CDT for Train Tuesday. This week we talk about the recently delivered Athearn Genesis GP15 series of locomotives. We'll discuss the railroads offered in this run and also have a special guest. We'll also answer a few of your questions during the live.

The EMD GP15-1 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between June 1976 and March 1982. Intended to provide an alternative to the rebuilding programs that many railroads were applying to their early road switchers, it is generally employed as a yard switcher or light road switcher. A total of 310 units were built for American railroads. A number of GP15-1s remain in service today for yard work and light road duty.
