Toby Keith did not just sing about loving America. He lived it every single day and made sure his children did the same.

His daughter Krystal shared at the University of Oklahoma commencement ceremony that her father always told her "Never apologize for being patriotic." She said he practiced what he preached through 11 USO tours to the most dangerous military zones in the world where most entertainers refused to go.

Krystal said "He was going into the most dangerous zones where guys that never got those entertainers to come to them were housed. He would go and boost their morale. We called him Captain America. And that's something he earned."

Trace Adkins confirmed that the last thing Toby Keith said before walking off the stage at every single concert was those same words. "Never apologize for being patriotic."

On this Independence Day, those words hit harder than ever. God bless Toby Keith. God bless America.

Some summer traditions never get old. A lawn chair by the car. A blanket on the grass. Friends gathered together waiting for the first firework to light up the sky.

Join the City of Carbondale and SIU Carbondale on July 4 for an evening of live music, community, and fireworks as we celebrate Independence Day and America at 250.

The Southern Illinois Music Festival will perform at 7:45 p.m., followed by the community fireworks display at 9:15 p.m.

However you like to enjoy the show, we hope you'll spend the evening with us.
