The Burlington Police Department notifies the public about offenders in the Burlington area rediscovering, and once again, participating in “the Kia Challenge.” This trend involves locating Kia and Hyundai vehicles that cannot receive the company’s anti-theft software update and stealing the cars–which is a felony. The vehicles considered at risk usually have traditional key ignitions and are years 2011 to 2022:
• Kia Sportage
• Kia Forte
• Kia Soul
• Kia Rio
• Kia Sedona
• Hyundai Elantra
• Hyundai Sonata
• Hyundai Tucson
• Hyundai Santa Fe
There are multiple effective ways to reduce theft risk. We encourage the public to take measures to protect their vehicles. The most effective measures are:
1. Free anti-theft hardware installation: In December 2023, Kia announced a free ignition cylinder protector device for affected owners. Check your VIN on the manufacturer’s website or contact the local car dealer to find out if your vehicle qualifies.
2. Use a steering wheel lock: a visible device acts as a strong visual and physical deterrence measure, as offenders usually act on easier/simpler targets.
3. Park in secure, well-lit locations (when possible): Be intentional about parking your vehicle in a well-lit, camera-equipped location. If at home and available, use a garage.
4. Use an immobilizer or alarm: An immobilizer prevents the engine from starting without the correct authorization. A quality alarm with a starter-kill feature adds another layer of protection.
As additional precautions, please make sure to keep your vehicle’s software updated, use a GPS or tracking device that can help recover the car if it is stolen, and refrain from leaving valuables inside the vehicle in plain view.
