🚨🚨EDUCATION IS VALUABLE🚨🚨
Why We Use PCM Engine Heaters on Every Competitive Performance Race Engine

When you’re dealing with a purpose-built race engine, cold starts are one of the harshest conditions the engine will ever experience. That’s why every engine we build and service is plumbed for a PCM (Power Cool Manufacturing) engine heater before it ever sees the racetrack.

Here’s why:

✅ Brings the engine to operating temperature before startup

* Aluminum blocks, cylinder heads, pistons, bearings, and valvetrain components are engineered around operating-temperature clearances.
* Preheating allows these parts to expand much closer to their intended running dimensions before the engine is started.

✅ Reduces cold-start wear

* Cold oil is more viscous and takes longer to reach every critical engine component.
* Preheating promotes faster oil circulation to the crankshaft, rod bearings, camshafts, timing components, and valvetrain, reducing metal-to-metal contact during startup.

✅ Reduces unnecessary idle time

* Race engines are built to perform under load—not to sit and idle.
* Long idle periods can contribute to increased engine hours, fuel dilution of the oil, carbon accumulation, and unnecessary wear while producing very little useful work.
* Using an engine heater allows the engine to reach operating temperature with far less idle time before heading to staging or the racetrack.

✅ Warm weather doesn’t eliminate startup wear

* One of the biggest misconceptions is that an engine heater is only beneficial in cold climates.
* Even if it’s 90°F outside, the engine, coolant, oil, bearings, and internal components are still well below their normal operating temperature of roughly 180–200°F. Ambient temperature does not replace proper engine warm-up.
* The goal isn’t simply to make the engine “warm”—it’s to reduce cold-start wear and minimize the amount of time the engine spends idling to reach operating temperature.

✅ Improves consistency

* Starting each race day from a repeatable operating temperature provides a more consistent baseline for tuning, diagnostics, and overall engine performance.

✅ Protects your investment

* Whether it’s a fresh engine or one with many nights of racing, reducing cold-start wear and limiting unnecessary idle time helps maximize reliability and extend engine life.

At Competitive Performance, we don’t just build horsepower—we build reliable horsepower. Every detail matters, and proper engine preparation is one of the biggest contributors to long-term performance.

Maximum reliability starts before the engine ever fires. That’s why we trust PCM Engine Heaters on our race engines.

Yesterday I got the call to head to US 24 Speedway and help get Braxton Flatt’s program dialed in for the night’s racing. Opportunities like these are always appreciated, and it was a pleasure working alongside such a professional team and helping such a talented young driver.

We were able to get the car idling clean, make a few adjustments, and have it ready to put together a solid run. It’s always rewarding when the hard work in the pits translates into speed on the racetrack.

Thank you to Braxton, the entire Flatt family, and everyone on the team for putting your trust in me. I truly appreciate the opportunity and look forward to working together again in the future.

Congratulations on a great night, and thank you for choosing DM Tuned and Competitive Performance. We’re always ready to help teams find that extra edge and keep there equipment running right. 🏁💪

🚨🚨🚨
Valve lash is one of the most overlooked — yet most critical — measurements in a high RPM 600cc micro sprint engine.

When we are operating in the 16,500–17,800 RPM range, there is very little room for error.

Valve lash is the specified clearance between the camshaft base circle and the valve actuation component (bucket/follower depending on engine design). That clearance exists to compensate for thermal expansion as the engine reaches operating temperature.

As cylinder heads, valves, camshafts, buckets, and seats heat up, each component expands at a different rate. Proper lash ensures the valve can fully return to the seat while maintaining the intended valve event accuracy.

Why does this matter?

Too TIGHT:
• Valve may not fully seat
• Loss of compression and cylinder sealing
• Hot combustion gases can leak across the valve face and seat
• Accelerated valve and seat wear
• Increased valve temperature
• Potential for burnt valves and reduced reliability

Too LOOSE:
• Reduces effective valve lift and duration from the cam profile
• Alters intended valve timing events
• Increases impact loading into the valvetrain
• Accelerates wear of cam lobes, buckets, and related components
• Can reduce airflow efficiency and consistency cylinder-to-cylinder

Now apply that to 16,500–17,800 RPM.

At 17,800 RPM the crankshaft is rotating nearly 300 times PER SECOND.

At those speeds the valvetrain is opening and closing thousands of times per minute while trying to maintain precise valve motion and complete valve seating.

That is why valve lash is NOT a “set it and forget it” measurement.

General lash ranges commonly seen on many 600cc motorcycle-based race applications:
• Intake: .004”–.007”
• Exhaust: .007”–.011”

⚠️ These are GENERAL reference ranges ONLY and are NOT a substitute for engine-specific specifications.

ALWAYS verify lash specifications in your service manual and/or follow the recommendations of your engine builder. Different camshafts, valve materials, seat work, operating temperatures, and intended RPM ranges may require different targets.

Power matters.
Reliability matters.
Repeatability wins races.
