Do you need a four-season RV for fall camping in Montana?

Not always—but freezing weather changes what you need to evaluate.

A standard RV may be sufficient for mild shoulder-season trips that remain above freezing. If you expect repeated freezing temperatures—especially while keeping the water system active—prioritize actual cold-weather construction and protection.

Compare these features instead of relying only on a package name:

❄️ Insulation: Ask what is installed in the roof, walls and floor, and whether insulated-window options are available.

🚰 Tank and plumbing protection: Look for protected tanks, water lines and underbelly components.

🔥 Heat delivery: Determine whether heat reaches vulnerable plumbing areas—not merely the main living room.

🔋 Power and propane: Colder weather increases heating and energy demands, so understand how your setup will keep operating overnight.

📖 Manufacturer guidance: Ask what temperatures and operating conditions the manufacturer supports and when winterization is still required.

Can a portable heater replace the RV furnace? It may warm the cabin, but it does not guarantee that hidden plumbing or tanks remain protected.

What is the coldest temperature you want to camp in—and do you plan to use running water? Comment below or message Bish’s RV of Bozeman, and we’ll help you compare the right features.

Are RV slide-outs worth it?

For many shoppers, yes—if the additional living space matters more than having the simplest possible RV.

The good: Slide-outs can provide valuable walking, seating and living room when you’re camped—especially for families, longer stays and rainy Montana days.

The bad: Every slide adds seals, moving parts and electrical or hydraulic components that require inspection and system-specific maintenance.

The must-check: Retract every slide before buying. Can you still reach the bathroom, refrigerator and anything needed during a travel stop? Also confirm that your usual campsites provide enough clearance outside.

Slide-outs generally suit campers who spend more time inside or travel with a larger crew. A no-slide layout may suit frequent movers, tighter campsites and owners who value simplicity above maximum floor space.

How many slides do you need? Only enough to solve a real layout problem. More slides are not automatically better.

Would you choose extra room or fewer moving parts? Comment below—or message Bish’s RV of Bozeman with your camping crew and travel style.

What’s the best RV floor plan for a family with kids?

For most families, a bunkhouse is the best starting point—but only if it passes four real-life tests.

✅ Bunk size: Have everyone test the actual beds. An advertised sleeping capacity doesn’t guarantee every space will comfortably fit your family.

✅ Storage: Account for clothes, food, bedding, chairs, bikes and rainy-day gear—not merely what fits in the cabinets during a walkthrough.

✅ Loaded weight: Compare the RV’s ratings and cargo-carrying capacity with your tow vehicle after including passengers, supplies and equipment.

✅ Travel-day access: With the slides closed, can you still reach the bathroom, refrigerator and anything needed during a roadside stop?

The upside of a bunkhouse is dedicated sleeping space without converting the dinette every night. The tradeoff is that bunks use space that could otherwise become a larger kitchen, bathroom or living area.

Corner bunks or a private bunk room? Corner bunks often suit families wanting a more compact RV. A separate bunk room offers additional privacy when the extra size and weight fit your plans.

How many people camp with you—and how old are the kids? Comment below or message Bish’s RV of Bozeman, and we’ll help you identify the layout features worth comparing.

Start with where you want to camp—not simply the biggest floor plan you can tow.

Campground fit can vary by park, campground and even individual campsite. Before choosing an RV, look up three places you genuinely want to visit and check:

📏 Listed RV or trailer length limits
🚙 How the listing handles your tow vehicle
↩️ Driveway type and maneuvering room
↔️ Site width and room for slides or awnings
🔌 Hookups, generator rules and other restrictions

The right RV balances sleeping and living space with access to the places you want to explore.

An RV costs more than the monthly payment—and the real total depends heavily on how you plan to use it.

Before choosing an RV, remember to budget for:

🛡️ Insurance, registration and applicable taxes
⛽ Fuel, propane and towing-related costs
🔧 Routine maintenance, winterization and future repairs
🏕️ Campground and utility fees
🏠 Storage if keeping it at home isn’t an option
🧰 Essential setup gear and accessories

A better budgeting question is: “What will this RV cost for the way my family actually plans to camp?”

Do you plan to store your RV at home or pay for off-site storage? That single answer can meaningfully change your ownership budget. Tell us below! 👇

Travel trailer or fifth wheel—which one actually fits your camping style? 🚐

A travel trailer may be the better fit if you:

✅ Want a broad range of sizes and tow-vehicle options
✅ Prefer a conventional rear hitch
✅ Want to keep your pickup bed available for gear

A fifth wheel may be the better fit if you:

✅ Have a compatible pickup and in-bed hitch
✅ Prefer a taller, bi-level floor plan
✅ Want more separation between living and sleeping areas

Neither style is automatically better. The right answer depends on your tow vehicle, camping crew, storage needs and how long you typically stay.

Which matters more to you: keeping the truck bed open or gaining the fifth-wheel layout? Tell us below! 👇
